Introduction
Save the Children is using a Child Protection System approach to programming in the Dadaab camps and host community. This involves working to strengthen different levels of the ‘system’: Government and NGOs at one level, the community at another, and children as central to the third level. Further to this, Save the Children promotes a right-based approach towards child protection. Children play a key role in advocating for their needs and identifying local solutions in partnership with state and non-state actors. Meaningful participation of children in protecting themselves from abuse can achieve real changes on knowledge, attitudes and practises around child protection in the community. Save the Children recognises a greater impact and a better quality of programmes when children’s participation is promoted and encouraged. A team of trained and experience staff implement activities for and interact with children in their day-to-day work, yet many of them have reported a lack of advance knowledge and skills in implementing child-led activities and enabling genuine participation, let alone the complex and challenging working environments in Dadaab.
