Job Title:Agricultural Input Research Assistant

Station:East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania
Duration of the Assignment: 2.5 years
Background Information: Under the EAC/International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) Partnership, EAC is seeking to engage an Agricultural Inputs Research Assistant. The incumbent will support the Regional Agricultural Inputs Trade Specialist in the implementation of the Strengthening Trade at the Regional Level in Agricultural Inputs in Africa (STAR) project and EAC’s other input trade related activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will undertake the following activities:
1. Obtain information on private sector and other organizations involved in the trade, manufacture/production and marketing of fertilizers, seds and crop protection products
2. Collect data on trade in inputs (seed, fertilizer, and CPP) among EAC countries.
3. Obtain data on the prevailing prices of agricultural inputs particularly fertilizers at the national, global and regional levels
4. Obtain information about organizations responsible for the regulation of quality and truth in labeling
5. Obtain data on tariffs, taxes and subsidies in EAC countries
6. Assist to compile the annual requirement of agricultural inputs in EAC
7. Assist to disseminate market information on agricultural inputs in the region
8. Compile the status of input marketing arrangements in EAC member states.
9. List studies undertaken to understand the impact fertilizer programs in EAC member States
10. Compile data on the potential for production of inputs in EA
11. Liaise with colleagues at EAC and IFDC to prepare briefs on the status of agricultural inputs programs in the region
Qualifications:
1. Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in economics, agricultural economics, business or related areas.
2. Work experience: One to five years of experience in data collection and analysis. Experience with an international or regional organization dealing with trade issues will be an added advantage.
3. Languages: Fluency in oral and written English.
4. Communication: Ability to draft intelligible trchnical reports; effective oral and written communications skills.
5. Technology awareness: Proficiency in the Microsoft Office tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PPT); statistical software (SPSS).
