The U.S. Mission Addis Ababa is seeking an individual for the position of Regional Environmental Specialist in the Regional environmental Office of the Embassy.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The REO’s Environment Specialist advises on environment, science, technology, and health (ESTH) issues, policies and initiatives in the East Africa region, organizes meetings, travel, and site visits within Ethiopia for REO in furtherance of REO priorities and initiatives, supports the activities of USG science agencies, and promotes bilateral and regional cooperation among agencies and organizations concerned with ESTH matters. The Specialist reports on and analyzes ESTH issues and opportunities, and identifies participants for USG exchange and visitor programs. The fifteen countries in the East Africa region are Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item. Supporting documentations (e.g., letters of employment, certificates, driver’s license, awards, copies of degrees earned) that addresses the qualification requirements of the position as listed above should also be submitted.
1. Required Education: Master’s degree in a field relating to environment or science policy (e.g. natural science, engineering, water resources, land and water management, natural resource management, environmental policy, environmental law) is required.
2. Required Prior Experience: Minimum of Eight years in any of the above fields with duties including program development, management or policy analysis is required.
3. Language Requirement: Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading English and Amharic is required.
4. Other Skills: Independent knowledge includes familiarity with international environment, science, and health policy issues (e.g. current threats/challenges, major international conventions, accepted concepts in environmental management); familiarity with principal international institutions: USG agencies, UN agencies, international NGOs; and familiarity with research methodologies and procedures relevant to environmental issues (e.g. scientific method, literature research, basic statistical analysis), and competency in using MS Office Suite and internet is required.
5. Interpersonal skill Requirement: Ability to demonstrate cooperative working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and external organizations is required.
SELECTION PROCESS
