The African Union,established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged withspearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development bypromoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples ofAfrica and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide.Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthenits capacity to deliver through, among others, the implementation of a neworganizational structure and the filling of all vacant positions.
The Commission of the African Union invites citizens of Member States to applyfor the below specified position at the Interafrican Bureau for AnimalResources, Nairobi/Kenya.
For the implementation ofProject Participation of African Nations in sanitary and phytosanitarystandard-setting organisations (PAN-SPSO) phase 2, AU/IBAR seeks the servicesof a food safety officer to support the activity of the Project CoordinationUnit and the Standard and Trade Secretariat.
Opening of the position issubject to the availability of funds.

Duty Station: Nairobi-Kenya with frequenttravel to African Union Member States and the headquarters of Regional EconomicCommunities (RECs).
Major dutiesand responsibilities
The position is based within the headquarters ofAU-IBAR
Under the supervision of the PANSPSO Coordinator, receivingguidance from the Director, AU/IBAR, the incumbent will provide comprehensivetechnical assistance and advice to the project in the design, management,implementation and assessment of activities in the field of food safety. She/Hewill particularly undertake the following tasks:
- Planning, development, and coordination of the approved activities related to food safety, including the organisation of expert meetings, seminars and workshops and the supervision of training courses
· Collate compile,publish and circulate food safety related information relevant for standard setting process and produce technicalpapers on SP standards as well as relevant research results and scientificinformation
- Establish a database of food safety experts to be proposed for representation of Africa in committees and ad-hoc groups, and institutions to be considered as centres of excellence
- Select priority topics of common interest for the Continent in the food safety (FS) area
- Analyze information, with help of experts when necessary, and suggest African positions/comments/additional work
- Propose common positions for validation by National Codex contact points, Codex committees and Codex Alimentarius Commission
- Provide technical guidance for preparation of attendance of African MS and RECs in meetings of Codex committees and Codex Alimentarius Commission
- Organize and participate in the training of focal points and experts
- Circulate relevant technical information to National Codex contact points
· Assistthe project coordinator in
o Preparing work plan andbudgets
o Drafting quarterly and annualprogress reports
o Identifying needs and ToRsfor specific short term expertise for studies, technical training, assistance,and following-up the provision of services
o Coordinating activitiesimplemented by RECs
- Liaise with the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and CCAfrica coordinator to foster collaboration
- assist RECs in :
§ Identifying training needs and organizingregional training sessions for experts
§ Organizing regional consultation meetingsto harmonize positions and contributions of member states in Codex committees and CodexAlimentarius Commission meetings
§ Drafting actions plans and budgets atregional level
· Assistwith the development and implementation of a monitoring and evaluation systemthat allows assessing the progress made by member countries in terms ofparticipation in Codex Alimentarius standard setting activities
- Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor and the Director of AU-IBAR
Qualifications
APostgraduate Degree (Msc) in animal health, foodscience,biochemistry, microbiology, or food technology or. A first leveluniversity degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications andexperience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience
§ Seven years proven working experience in the food safety sector () provenexperience in management position at international level is an advantage.
- Experience in dealing with senior government, regional and international organization officials
- Experience in dealing with Codex Alimentarius Commission and CC Africa is an advantage
Skills and competencies
§ Self-starter with the ability to strategically planown work
§ Be conversant with international standard setting organizations(Codex Alimentarius in particular) procedures and cycles;
§ Good networker with the ability to maintain a positiveand fruitful dialogue and relationship with the main institutions operating onthe Continent
§ Excellent communication skills
§ Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to operateeffectively across organisational boundaries
§ Good judgment/Decision-making skills
Languagerequirement
Proficiency in one ofthe African Union working languages is a requirement. Knowledge of one or moreof the other AU working languages would be an added advantage.
Age Requirement
Mustbe preferably between the age of 35 and 50 years.
Tenure of Appointment
The initial appointment will be for 11 monthsincluding a 3 months probation period. Contract extension will be subject to satisfactoryperformance and availability of funding

Remuneration : Thesalary attached to the position is an annual lump-sum of US$ 67,150.57inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited staff, and US$55,597.21 inclusive of all allowances for locally recruited staff.
