The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is seeking a macroeconomist to lead our work on economic and fiscal policy. The successful candidate will have excellent research and analytical skills; expertise in economic theory, including new economic thinking; and an ability to contribute innovative ideas to public policy debates. S/he will lead and manage a team of researchers, contribute to fundraising targets and undertake public speaking and media appearances.
Econometric research skills are not essential, but an ability to write and communicate fluently is vital. We want someone who thinks in numbers and writes in prose: someone who can hold their own amongst specialists but explain their ideas to non-specialists in a compelling way.
IPPR is one of the UK’s busiest and most high-profile think tanks, with a broad research agenda and a range of expertise that allows it to examine critical economic questions from a wide variety of angles. The successful candidate will work closely with other senior colleagues leading research across the domestic policy agenda, including infrastructure, housing, welfare and skills. The departing incumbent in this post (Tony Dolphin) routinely appears in the national media. IPPR also plays a key role in convening intellectual debate on economic policy: for example, last year we hosted Thomas Piketty’s first public event in the UK.
As part of our commitment to flexible working we will consider a range of options for the successful applicant to fill the post. All options can be discussed at interview stage.
