Community Development Expert
Private Forestry Programme (PFP) wishes to recruit a Tanzanian Community Development Expert to work in the Southern Highlands and Kilombero Valley. The successful candidate will: promote inclusive, participatory village land use planning; promote tree grower associations (TGAs) at the community level; support TGAs in assessing their plantations; and guide TGAs on market driven silviculture of their plantations. The successful candidate will also provide support to TGAs in coordinating sales of plantation grown trees.
The Community Development Expert will report directly to the international plantation forestry expert and will coordinate with the TGAApex Body service centre manager.
Duty station: Southern Highlands of Tanzania (Njombe)
Duration: To be recruited and deployed as soon as possible, and on successful completion of a three month probation period, to be retained full-time up to 31 December 2017
Specific responsibilities:
The Community Development Expert will:
Strengthen processes for identifying and selecting villages with high potential for market based plantation forestry
Raise awareness in villages about land tenure and village land use planning issues before village land use planning processes start
Support villages in selecting residents to work with the District authorities in village land use planning
Introduce District village land use planning teams in the villages
Confirm that gender equity, reduction of social inequity, climate sustainability and human rights issues are fully considered in any village land use plans before they are presented to the villages for their endorsement
Support TGAs in assessing their overall plantation forest resources, and with their permission enter this data in the proposed southern highlands forest information system '
Guide TGAs on market driven silviculture of their plantations
Assist TGA members in selling their produce to best advantage
Strengthen development of forest and market information systems for TGAs in the Southern Highlands and Kilombero Valley of Tanzania
Strengthen monitoring and evaluation of PFP interventions
Strengthen the provision of accessible forest resource information to participating forest based industries to facilitate their operational and strategic planning
Undertake other tasks as may be requested by the PFP Team Leader
Qualifications:
Bachelors or preferably masters level degree in forestry or Msc in Community economic development or Msc in rural development.
At least ten years of senior level experience in private sector forestry
Experience with information technology applications in forestry
Excellent communication skills and ability to interact comfortably with rural communities
