In 1967 David Sainsbury set up the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. He has since given it over £1billion to invest in charitable causes. In East Africa, Gatsby focuses on driving sustainable economic growth to create jobs and raise incomes.
Gatsby’s Textile Programme is focused on securing the competitiveness and growth of Tanzania’s textile and garment industry, and Gatsby is seeking a new Programme Director to oversee and deliver the rapid expansion of this programme. The Textiles PD will lead strategy development, oversee implementation and develop effective working relationships with stakeholders, including government industries, key businesses, donors and potential investors.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Deep understanding of trade policy and investment promotion approaches. Some experience of Textiles and garments sector would be a distinct advantage.
Excellent strategic leadership and management skills and experience of leading projects to enhance competitiveness in relevant sectors;
A record of building relationships at the most senior level across the private sector, governments and donors.
Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills. Polished written and verbal communication skills in English essential; working knowledge of Kiswahili a significant advantage.
A minimum of ten years’ relevant work experience, e.g. in private sector consultancy, development consultancy or development project management at a senior level.
A minimum of five years’ work experience in Africa at managerial level, with demonstrable experience and understanding of smallholder agriculture and ideally cotton agronomy.
