Position: literacy Coach
Based: Dar Es Salaam with significant field travel
Room to Read is an international non-governmental organization (IN GO) that works in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children's literature construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, promoting literacy and providing education to girls.
Room to Read Tanzania is looking for 3 literacy Coaches to be based in Dar Es Salaam, with field work in Bagamoyo District. The literacy Coaches will report to the Program Operations Director. The incumbent will support local communities and governments, to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supports school librarian in the setup of the library, including book leveling and classification system, check-out system, setting up furniture, and creating a library period time-table.
Regularly observes and models good practices in library management, library activities and classroom instruction
Collaborates with librarian, Head Teacher, and community to develop sustainability plan for managing library and acquiring new books after Room to Read's support ends.
Supports and participates in literacy events, parent meeting and other community activities.
Serves as the technical resource in the schools on applying literacy skills and the habit of reading techniques in the classroom and library ..
Supports Class 1 and 2 teachers in effective use of ongoing student tracking assessments to inform instruction.
Conducts and analyzes data related to formative student assessments to inform support for Grade 1 and 2 teachers.
Tracks, documents and reports library monitoring data to ensure timely and accurate reporting to stakeholders.
KEY REQUIREMENTS: University degree in Education, Social Development, Business Management or other related field; 1-2 years of related work experience; Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), internet and related applications; Good command of English and Kiswahili languages (both written and oral); Good interpersonal skills and a team player; Ability to monitor progress of program implementation; Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people; Desire and ability to spend 90% of time traveling and visiting school sites to provide coaching and monitor progress of program implementation; Experience working with local communities, children and teachers; Experience with reading, literacy or learning improvement programs
