BACKGROUND
Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a part of Danish Refugee Council (DRC). DDG has activities in more than 10 countries across the world, and has since 2008 expanded it Mine Action services to include more comprehensive Armed Violence Reduction interventions. Recognising the widespread proliferation of uncontrolled Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in the region, DDG expanded its approach from traditional mine action to also addressing the threats from SALW, local conflict, lack of security providers, and has now developed a strong Armed Violence Reduction (AVR) portfolio, comprised by the following components:
• Building capacity of Government and Civil Society to address safety needs
• Support to Security Providers, especially strengthening their relationships with communities
• Strengthening Small Arms Management
• Addressing threats to life and limbs posed by explosive remnants of war
• Building capacity for Conflict Prevention and Management
Currently DDG has AVR programmes in Somaliland, Somalia, Uganda, South Sudan, Yemen, and more programmes will be established in 2013. DDG is positioning itself as a key implementer of Armed Violence Reduction activities in the world.
POSITION’S OVERALL OBJECTIVE
The overall objective of the AVR Advisor is to support the AVR Managers in order to maximise the quality of AVR implementation in DDG and to harmonise the materials and training approaches in DDG.
The AVR Advisor is - under the technical guidance of the AVR Head of Programme Development - the focal point for advice, training and technical input on AVR issues (except technical Mine Action and SALW matters) for the DDG AVR Programmes.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
In order to achieve the stated overall objectives, the AVR Advisor will spend the majority of his/her time directly on assisting the DDG AVR programmes, oftentimes in the field. This will be done on a cost-sharing basis. The remaining of his/her time will be spent on AVR Research and Development (R&D) activities that will improve DDG’s AVR approaches. This may include development of materials and resources, training and coaching of staff etc.
The regional and global work and development of generic materials etc. is coordinated by the Head of Programme Development (AVR).
A significant level (app. 50%) of field work is expected subject to security clearance.
The AVR Advisor will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:
A. OPERATIONS
• The AVR Advisor shall monitor and maximise the quality of AVR staff and methods used in DDG. The AVR Advisor shall also support the AVR Managers in improving the quality of the AVR staff and methods within DDG on a cost sharing basis. In details the AVR Advisor shall do the following:
I. Mentor, advise and collaborate with the AVR Managers in DDG’s AVR programmes in order to increase their skills in development of materials and training approaches for the AVR staff to increase and deepen the range of training DDG offer.
II. Build staff capacity and skills in DDG’s AVR programmes through delivery of training and workshops, in collaboration with the AVR Managers and Country Directors.
B. PROGRAMME & MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT
• The AVR Advisor will collaborate with the Head of Programme Development (AVR), the AVR Managers and the relevant national staff in developing AVR activities, approaches, manuals and materials in DDG’s AVR Programmes. On request and on a cost sharing basis, the AVR Advisor will adjust these materials to fit specific local contexts within DDG.
• The AVR advisor will also conduct quality assurance of AVR manuals, materials, curriculums, lessons plans etc. developed in AVR programmes.
C. FEASIBILITY STUDIES
• The AVR Advisor may be requested to conduct feasibility studies in new areas, and assist in setting up new AVR operations (proposal writing, fundraising, training, etc.).
D. RESEARCH
• The AVR Advisor may be tasked with facilitating and/or leading research on AVR applied in the DDG operations, in cooperation with external research institutions.
E. OTHER
• Any other tasks assigned by the AVR Representative & Head of Programme Development (AVR).
QUALIFICATIONS
• University Degree in Social Sciences, Law, International Development, International Relations or related area
• Minimum of 3 years working experience at an international level with humanitarian international NGOs or operational UN agencies
• Minimum of 3 years field experience in conflict affected areas
• Strong training, mentoring and facilitation skills
• Proven experience in the area of Armed Violence Reduction
• Proven ability in designing and implementing Monitoring & Evaluation frameworks
• Fluent writing skills in English, preferably with publishing experience
• High degree of computer literacy

CONDITIONS
Duty station: Hargeysa, Somaliland, with frequent travel globally. This is a ‘non-family duty station’ and accommodation is provided.
Contract: 12 months - with possibilities for extension, subject to funding. The position offers standard vacation and holiday benefits. The position is subject to funding.
