Increase awareness and visibility of GAVI and its mission, in key donor countries and globally, by developing GAVI’s science, health and broader media network; identifying, developing and pitching effective story ideas; developing communication tools and contributing to social media activities. Aiming to scale up public support and political will to accelerate equitable access to vaccines and bring an end to vaccine-preventable diseases, the GAVI Alliance is seeking a seasoned science writer and editor with senior media relations experience and a passion for global health. Key results expected: • Increased profile of GAVI and immunisation globally and in key donor countries; • Increased profile of GAVI in science-related media and immunisation in general media; • Increased understanding among key audiences of GAVI’s innovative business model and approach to development; • Superior communications strategies, strategic partnerships, innovative campaigns and new media approaches; • Well-written content tailored for specific audiences and integrated into campaign approaches.
Main duties/ Responsibilities: • Scientific Communications • Serve as Scientific Editor for the organisation and ensure scientific quality assurance of GAVI communications and publications; • Act as communications expert and focal point on epidemiology, vaccine science, public health and other scientific communications;
• Develop new communication tools to engage a broad audience on health and science related topics;
• Identify, develop and pitch effective story ideas to raise the profile of GAVI and immunisation in GAVI countries; • Produce compelling, science-based content for a variety of GAVI audiences and communications channels. These include CEO speeches, opinion pieces, authored articles, press releases, website stories and features, and text for publications.
• Media relations and donor communications • Maintain and build relationships with a key set of reporters, including journalists who cover science; • Act as communications expert and focal point Act on 2-3 GAVI-related topics (e.g. specific diseases and vaccines or GAVI programmes); • Devise and implement donor country specific communications strategies that are integrated into GAVI’s fund raising plans; • Manage and implement media events, from Geneva-based press conferences to global announcements; • Proactively seek, pitch and manage interviews for the GAVI CEO, Board Chair and others; • Identify reputational risk issues and engineer rapid responses --defending our brand, and injecting ally voices into important debates; • Act as a spokesperson for the organisation.
• Partnerships • Build relationships with global health and scientific networks partners to rally collective support for immunisation over the long term and around specific goals and opportunities.
Note: The essential functions listed in this section are not limited only to the tasks listed and may include other duties as assigned.
Academic Advanced University degree in science with additional training in journalism, communications or related field; but professional experience will be taken in account.
Work experience • Minimum 7 years of work experience and increasing responsibility in media and communications, with strong science journalism and public relations;
Skills/competencies • A strong scientific writing and editing background honed in journalism and/or corporate communications environments; • An eye for a good science story and the ability to turn it into a story for a mainstream audience. Excellent storytelling, writing and editing skills in English for all types of media (Other languages a plus). • Writing is immediate, personable, and memorable. Concise and crisp communicator who welcomes creativity, innovation and collaboration. • Excellent media contacts and strong networking skills; • Demonstrated know-how in developing and implementing communications strategies, including social media; • Mission driven, self-starter who can work flexible hours and manage your time independently; • Team player who enjoys working in a multi-cultural environment, establishing harmonious and effective working relationships as part of a close-knit team. • Sense of humour a plus.
Languages • Written and spoken fluency in English; • Fluency in French, German, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish a plus.
