BUILDING AUTOMATION ENGINEER The African Union

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of vacant posts.

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member

States for the post of BUILDING AUTOMATION ENGINEER.

1. Post:

Job Title: Building Automation Engineer

Grade: P2
Supervisor: Chief of Building Automation
Directorate: Administration and Human Resources Development
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

2. Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Building Automation the incumbent:

‐ Supervises the building automation and control system and the fire alarm system technicians and their duties;

‐ Identifies spare parts and initiates their purchases, maintains medical equipment, assists in making technical evaluation of Request for Proposal (RFP) and Invitation to Bid (ITB) submitted by vendors;

‐ Checks through the use of software parameters and hand instruments/tools, the proper operations of various devices including: temperature sensors and controllers, air velocity sensors, relays, flow switches, smoke detectors, heat detectors, etc in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and maintenance schedules;

‐ Adjusts software parameters to operate Heating, Ventilation and Air

Conditioning (HVAC) as well as Lighting installations to meet specific operational requirements using Estate Management Controllers (EMC) or a central computer;
‐ Maintains/troubleshoots electronic control modules of the Chiller Plants,

Electronic Level Indicators, Fuel Dispensing Pumps, Cold Rooms and

Refrigerators by guiding subordinates in accordance with manufacturers literature and through the use of spare parts and required had instruments/tools;

‐ Keeps record of spare parts in the Central Stores, initiates replenishments; requests and receives spare parts from the Central Store with the approval of the supervisor;

‐ Prepares technical specifications for project proposals related to fire alarm, building automation and control as well as other electrical systems;

‐ Assists in technical evaluation of Request for Proposals submitted by contractors and suppliers in connection with field of expertise;

‐ Trains security officers on Fire Alarm System, assists them in identifying causes of fire alarms and the locations of their initiation zones.

4. Qualifications and Experience Required:

 A minimum University BachelorDegree in Engineering or higher technician in building construction

5. Professional experience required:

 At least five years experiences asSupervisor of building maintenance or10 years experiences in construction and Project Manage

6. Other Relevant Skills:


 Prepares drawings, data bases and reports utilizing computer software such as

AutoCAD, MS word, MS Excel etc;

7. Language Requirement:

Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Proficiency of one or several other working language(s) would be an added advantage.

8. Age Requirement:

Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.


9. Tenure of Appointment:

The appointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months be consider as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

11. Remuneration:

Indicative basic salary US$27,892.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (46% of basic salary), housing allowance (US$14,414.40 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc. for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
