The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs plays a key role in improving the quality of life in the UK by enhancing the environment and biodiversity, supporting British farming, together with the development of a strong and sustainable green economy that is resilient to climate change.

Defra puts evidence and analysis at the heart of delivering policy. The Department is now looking to appoint a Chief Economist to lead and deploy a team of 200 professional economists, statisticians, social and operational researchers, and define the quality of analytical advice on which policy development is based.

By ensuring that outputs are insightful and innovative, the Chief Economist will play a key role in increasing Defra’s credibility and its ability to influence economic thinking and policy, across government and beyond.

Candidates will bring an outstanding track record in leadership roles within applied economics. Defra will require candidates to show evidence of leading strategic decision-making and contributing to policy formulation and delivery. Significant people and financial management skills will be essential. Applications will be welcomed from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experience within the public and private sector.
