AIR is currently looking for a Literacy Expert to support potential projects in Africa.

Responsibilities:
The candidate should be able to participate in conceptualizing and delivering early reading instruction to students in developing nations and conceptualizing and delivering related teacher training. The candidate should understand methodology for conducting rigorous evaluations of reading and literacy programs, including approaches to assessing student outcomes. He/she should be able to major tasks in large international projects, mentor and support junior staff, and assist in project quality assurance efforts.

Qualifications:
The selected candidate will have training and advanced educational training in reading/literacy-related areas such as reading, linguistic, developmental psychology, English as a second language, or a related field. The candidate will have experience teaching reading domestically and/or internationally; be knowledgeable about curricular approaches to teaching reading in developing countries; understand instructional approaches for use with children who are learning to read in non-native languages; and be able to develop and evaluate curricular materials.

Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D or equivalent in Reading, Psychology or a related social sciences field; 7 – 10 years of experience teaching, organizing reading programs, etc.; knowledge of instructional theory, curriculum development, and classroom experience (teaching and/or conducting classroom research); broad knowledge of reading theory and methodology; strong qualitative and quantitative research skills (experience with large data sets and/or classroom observations a plus); experience planning and leading projects, developing research and analysis plans, and writing reports in a clear and cogent manner.
