The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, is one of the leading investors and lenders in emerging markets. The mission of IFC is to promote sustainable private sector investment in developing countries, helping to reduce poverty and improve people's lives. IFC finances private sector investments in the developing world, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides technical assistance and advice to governments and businesses. The IFC is launching a special initiative to strengthen its ability to contribute to development of infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative involves building up specialized capacity in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), in order to work closely with Governments, the World Bank, and private investors to expand the flow of bankable infrastructure projects in the region. Expanding access to power in Sub-Saharan Africa is a key priority of the special initiative. IFC is therefore seeking to recruit a highly qualified specialist to support greater PPP developments, specifically in the power and renewable energy sectors. The position will be based in either Dakar, Nairobi or Washington DC. | |
Duties and Accountabilities: | |
The responsibilities of the Senior/Principal Investment Officer (PPP Power Specialist) include but are not limited to: -Leading and working closely with senior colleagues at the World Bank, and senior officials of member governments to identify potential areas for expanding availability and quality of power in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). -Leading and developing, again in conjunction with the World Bank and member governments, power (IPPs, corporates and utilities) and renewable energy opportunities into bankable transactions. -Integrating commercial, public policy, and environmental and social considerations into prospective investments. -Working with other IFC colleagues to process IFC investments in power and renewable energy sectors including leading investment teams. -Sharing knowledge on power developments in SSA with IFC colleagues on a global basis. | |
Selection Criteria: | |
-Advanced university degree. -At least 8-12 years of investment and industry experience, and a proven track record in originating, structuring and closing complex transactions. -Specific experience in PPPs and IPPs. -Deep knowledge of the power sectors and their main players, particularly in Sub Saharan Africa. -Clear understanding of both motivations and requirements of commercial investors, and of public policy considerations involved in the private delivery of power. -Ability to lead large teams and complex initiatives. -Robust organizational skills, results oriented and strong client focus. -Commitment to the World Bank Group and IFC’s mission, strategy and values and motivation to support development in Sub-Saharan Africa. -Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds. -Ability to interact directly and independently with senior government officials. -Comfortable working in an environment with a high degree of complexity, -Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and French.
