The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral fellow to work in a project under the ILRI-led new CGIAR Research Programme on Livestock and Fish (CRP3.7) that aims to consolidate research and development (R&D) efforts for a pro-poor transformation of the smallholder dairy value chains in Tanzania among other value chains. The R&D objectives of the Tanzania project over five years are to: (i) inform policy on appropriate role for pro-poor smallholder-based informal sector value chains in dairy sector development; (ii) generate and communicate evidence on business and organizational options for increasing participation of resource-poor male and female households in dairy value chains; and, (ii) develop scalable value chains approaches with improved organization and institutions serving resource-poor male and female smallholder dairy households. The specific research objectives during the initial one-year inception funded by Irish Aid – Tanzania are to: a) assess the current status of the Tanzanian dairy sector and identify appropriate entry points; b) develop a strategy for strengthening the policy environment to better support pro-poor dairy development; and, c) identify sites appropriate for piloting pro-poor dairy development interventions that have been successful elsewhere in East Africa. The Fellow will:
Lead field activities, working closely with national research and development partners Be responsible for evidence-based assessment of the feasibility and appropriateness of candidate organizational models to be piloted, including monitoring of gender dimensions, farmer business and organizational strategies and potential constraints to adoption Apply existing and new conceptual value chain frameworks to identify pro-poor opportunities for improving the associated value chains Contribute to preparing strategic communication products including journal publications and proposal development.
Specific qualifications:
PhD in agricultural economics, agribusiness or related field Experience in livestock (preferably dairy) R&D in East Africa particularly in Tanzania An understanding of innovation systems, input and service supply, and value chain analysis Experience in research design, use of quantitative and qualitative analytic methods Experience with supervising/coordinating collection, storage and analysis of gender-disaggregated data related to agricultural households and associated value chains Excellent written and spoken English (knowledge of Kiswahili will be an added advantage) Good interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills Ability to work in multi cultural environment and foster teamwork
Post Location: In Tanzania at a Project Office that will be located at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), at the ILRI office being established, or in an independent location to optimize travel and communication with the study sites, once these have been selected.
Position level: Post doctoral level, job grade 4A.
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal for another year
