REPORTS TO: PROGRAMME MANAGER – LAKE ZONE
BACKGROUND:
The Saving Mothers Project is funded by the Human Development Innovation Fund, and will be administered by Shirati KMT Hospital and conducted by both Canadian Physicians for Aid Relief and Amref Health Africa in Bunda and Tarime districts in Mara Region respectively.
JOB OBJECTIVES:
The Project Officer will collaborate with Tarime CHMT members in implementing the Saving Mothers Project intervention activities aiming to test the feasibility and effectiveness of a system of distributing safe birth kits with misoprostol to mothers who due to unavoidable circumstances may deliver outside health facilities in the district. S/he will be the focal person for project implementation of the project in the district assisted by the District Nurse (DN) assigned by the District Medical Officer (DMO).
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Develop and implement weekly, monthly and quarterly plans and budgets for approval by the Lake Zone Programme Manager (LZPM).
• Produce weekly updates, monthly and quarterly project reports to LZPM.
• Train and supervise health workers from health facilities in the entire district so that they are able to support Community Health Workers (CHWs) in their service areas for efficient distribution of birth kits, follow-up and reporting.
• Train and supervise CHWs in the district for efficient distribution of kits, follow-up and reporting. Organize and conduct community advocacy and mobilization meetings for participation in the distribution and use of safe birth kits.
• Maintain an efficient procurement and distribution system of safe birth kits with misoprostol as per project requirements.
• Maintain good working relationships with CHMT members and specifically the DN who will be assigned to the project by the District Medical Officer. This will include updating the CHMT on project progress and identifying areas of their support.
• Maintain good working relationships with other partners implementing the other components of the project i.e. Research Team based at Shirati KMT Hospital, Canadian Physicians for Aid Relief (CPAR) implementing a similar component in Bunda District, and Medic Mobile who will provide technical support to the project in use of mobile technology.
• In liaison with LZPM and other technical staff within Amref Health Africa, actively participate in programme development through idea notes development, proposal and manuscripts writing in line with Amref Health Africa strategic approaches.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPRIENCE
• A Nurse with diploma/degree in Nursing/Midwifery/Assistant Medical Officer/Clinical Officer with the required attributes
• Preferably MALE as will have extensive travel in the district using motor-cycle. Public Health specialty will be of added advantage
• Two (2) years’ or more experience in implementing community system intervention.
• Ability to work independently in the field.
• Ability to work with people from all backgrounds
• Basic computer application skills esp. word processing, excel, PowerPoint and e-communication.
• Valid driving license for motor-cycle
