Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization using the power of media to transform education and improve lives in the developing world. We are looking for a dynamic, team-oriented individual who will advance the work of this international nonprofit through the creation and use of a wide variety of communications tools. The ideal candidate will be interested in applying writing and communications skills in the context of international development and education. The incumbent will be an employee of Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (not Discovery Communications, Inc.).
This position will be based in the Silver Spring, MD offices of Discovery Communications.
Responsibilities
Specific duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
o Write, develop, and coordinate the creation of internal and external communication materials to raise awareness, funding, and donor recognition for global partners, including annual donor reports, Power Points, website content, press releases, etc.;
o Manage the development and re-design of DCGEP’s web site, working with an external design firm and providing ideas for re-design: thepoweroftv.org;
o Manage the DCGEP photo library, entering meta data, organizing assets, and responding to urgent requests for photo assets; management of photo releases;
o Manage digital images and video to be used as promotional resources for DCGEP Web and printed materials including reports to funders;
o Assist in coordinating events (domestic and international, especially in Africa) – school site events, donor recognition, screenings, etc.;
o Assist with social media and act as point of contact for Discovery Communications social media team
(they donate time to help DCGEP with social media outreach, including fb and twitter accounts;
o Create and execute DCGEP’s participation in donor’s “ambassador” projects;
o Coordinate DCGEP’s work with design, graphics and photography vendors;
o Proactively pursue editorial and speaking opportunities for DCGEP leadership;
o Create opportunities and develop stories to share about DCGEP impact through social media and
traditional outlets;
o Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• 5 years of hands-on communications and media relations work experience (a focus on education, nonprofit preferred);
• Demonstrated excellence creating communication tools (PPs, Keynotes, articles, etc.), digital outreach (blogs, online communities), use of social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and CMS platforms to promote business objectives;
• Superb writing and editing skills;
• Highly organized and detail oriented;
• Proven cross-cultural skills;
• Ability to cultivate and sustain strong relationships with coworkers;
• Superior interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse, international team members and external parties;
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible, innovative and resourceful under pressure, meet tight deadlines in
a fast-paced environment, assess and manage priorities, and work on multiple projects simultaneously;
• Must be independent, strategic, and a creative thinker who is a strong team player (no job is too small or too big) and willing to take on additional responsibilities as necessary;
• Willingness to travel to international locations in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East;
• Bachelors Degree or international equivalent required;
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
