Water For People is currently operating in 10 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. These countries include: Bolivia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, India, Malawi, Uganda and Rwanda. In Rwanda, Water For People works in two districts (Rulindo and Kicukiro) where it supports water supply, sanitation and hygiene education programs since 2008.
BACKGROUND & POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Water For People—Rwanda is currently managing several grants from various funders, including Charity: Water, RAIN, Gates Foundation, Laird Norton, and others, and we anticipate that the number and level of complexity of these grants will continue to increase.
The Grants Manager—Rwanda reports to the Country Director, will work in partnership with his or her colleagues in the Rwanda Country Program, as well as with the International Programs team in Denver to oversee the stewardship of the grants making up Water For People—Rwanda’s portfolio. S/he will also be responsible for gathering programmatic and financial information and writing concise and compelling grant reports in a timely manner per grant agreements. The position is also responsible for actively identifying and researching prospects, and compiling financial and non-financial data for grant proposals.
The Grants Manager must demonstrate understanding of organizational priorities, mission, vision, values and strategic goals and objectives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
1. Update and maintain the grants reporting calendar. The Grants Manager—Rwanda will maintain grant reporting schedules, work with program teams to draft narrative and financial reports prior to donor deadlines, review reports for consistency with project objectives and timelines, as well as for adherence to donor requirements, and edit reports prior to submission to the donor.
2. Monitor financial stewardship of grants. Monitor spending rates of all active Country Program grants on a monthly basis, working with staff and the finance team, as well as the Senior Strategic Program Manager and the Senior Manager Program Finance & Compliance to identify and resolve any problems related to spending rates. Ensure proper restrictions are placed on funds in the accounting software. Monitor donor pledge payments and ensure that Water For People—Rwanda is receiving funds on time.
3. Manage internal and external communications. Manage in-country donor relationships and communication with in-country donors. Manage communication with funder relationship managers in Denver, regarding reporting deadlines and project extensions, and respond to funder requests for information. Follow up with Water For People staff to ensure internal deadlines are met and information needed for proposals and reports is provided on time.
4. Identify funding opportunities and support proposal development. The position will work with the Country Director and the Regional Manager to identify opportunities for fundraising. S/he will work with the Country Director to develop proposals, and will communicate with the Regional Manager and the International Program.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
• 2-3 years in a similar position (grants management)
• Experience as a donor liaison, especially working with bilateral and multilateral organizations
• 1-2 years working with water and sanitation-related activities
• Advanced computer skills including proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and a comfort working with budgets, financial reports, and analyzing the results
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills
• Strong problem solving skills
• Fundraising experience
• Common sense for making judgments about a situation requiring deviations from routine tasks
• Self-starter and ability to undertake tasks without intensive supervision
• Maintain sound ethical principles, integrity and transparency of due process
EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
• Master’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management or any related fields
• Bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least 5 years working experience on a similar position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
• This position will be based in Kigali, with regular travel to program sites in Rwanda, and could include international travels
• Ability to travel to project sites and meet with partners, as necessary
KEY PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES:
• Ability to analyze and organize data and communicate results effectively.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with multiple priorities.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team effort.
• Must have well-developed written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
