For the Central Desk in the Netherlands, Radio Dabanga seeks an experienced journalist and radio-editor.
Role and Responsibilities
The journalist collects accurate and timely news and information from Darfur and Sudan, to record interviews, to edit radio items on a daily base for Radio Dabanga. The journalist contributes to the regular editorial staff meetings, is developing new formats and is building a wide resource-network in the field.
Radio Dabanga
Radio Dabanga is an independent radio station that is expanding activities in Sudan with producing more and better quality radio programmes. The focus is working at the grass roots level, producing radio programmes for a wide audience in Darfur and the international community using the station as an important source of information.
Starting date: 1 Nov 2012
Main tasks and functions of the editor:
• Gather, research and evaluate news of radio broadcast;
• Contribute written and audio file stories to news and current affairs;
• Compiles news from other sources like internet and news agencies;
• Contributes story ideas to daily editorial meeting and to news planning;
• Record, edit and produce news packages, vox pop or interviews as required;
• Writes news stories and submits them timely for approval to the Senior editor;
• Writes cue in-out for sound bites;
• Records voice-overs or translations if needed;
• Translate news from or to simple Arabic or local languages if needed;
• Presents news items if needed;
• Any additional tasks as required.
The experienced journalist reports to the Senior Editor. He or she has daily working relationship with other journalists in a team and is in daily contact with resource people in Sudan and Darfur.
Education
The candidate has preferably a degree in Journalism
Knowledge & Experience of Candidates:
- Has over 5 years of professional experience in grassroots reporting in Sudan on a professional level in a respectable media outlet
- Is familiar with the principles of independent journalism and the right to access of information and freedom of expression
– Is native in Arabic and preferably one of the languages spoken in Darfur.
– Speaks good English
– Has a strong network within Sudan to find news-resources and is able to develop and maintain relations with authorities and movements concerned
- Has a proven understanding of ethical journalism
Skills/Competencies
• Keen to share information internally and provide training
• Ability to relate well with many kinds of people
• Highly organised with a creative flair and a good attention to detail
• Pro-active approach
- Is ready to take part in preliminary training

Terms and conditions
Free Press Unlimited will contract the employee according to Dutch labour legislation. The project has secured funds. Selected candidates will have first a first full-time contract for six months with possibility of extension based on performance. Free Press Unlimited aims to start the position from the 1st of November 2012.
Salary according to Free Press Unlimited scale. Additional allowances and insurances for the local situation will be arranged.
