General Background
Tumaini La Maisha was established in 2011 and is the first and only NGO dedicated to improving the wellbeing of children with cancer in Tanzania. Tumaini La Maisha aims to provide non clinical services to children with cancer, such as a school and play therapy programme, family support programme and a long stay house, Ujasiri House, for children and their carer’s.
Tumaini La Maisha is situated at Muhimbili National Hospital and provides direct support to the Children’s Cancer ward. The ward has around 60 inpatients and approximately 15 staff. Treatment of children with cancer is completely free once they are at the ward. The ward treats in the region of 350 new children each year.
A range of activities for the children and their families and have been established and the role of a Programme Co-ordinator has been identified as an essential position to develop, support and lead all of the Programmes within Tumaini La Maisha . This position is part of the implementation of a broader 5-year Strategic Plan for Paediatric Oncology in Tanzania that will improve quality of and access to care and treatment for children with cancer all over Tanzania.
Main Purpose of the Role is to work with the Director to design, develop, support and lead programme’s within Tumaini La Maisha.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Support the existing staff and programmes within the School
- Work closely with the Play Therapist, to lead the design and implementation of the Therapeutic Play Programme in Ujasiri House and on the ward
- Lead and manage the Income Generating Activity programme for the carers
- Design and implement new initiatives and programmes such as the Social Programme which will facilitate social outings for the children and Transport Programme
- Responsible for documentation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of the programme
- Ensuring availability of materials and equipment for programme activities
- Oversee all aspects of quality programme design, planning, implementation and review of the programme ensuring stakeholder (staff, children and carer’s) participation
- Ensure that the programme adhere to international standards and best practices
- Conduct regular (monthly) analysis of monitoring and evaluation to identify strengths and weaknesses
- Oversee and develop training materials and resources for the programme
- Provide direct support and training to volunteers
- Responsible for organising volunteers documentation and to act as a point of contact for all volunteers in the house and on the ward
- Assist in the coordination of the admission and discharge of children and their carers from the ward to the house
- Participate proactively and regularly in planning meetings, making concrete contributions to strategic and operational planning
- Provide support in all activities that relate to fundraising or awareness raising activities relating to the ward and Tumaini La Maisha
Essential Requirements:
- University Degree or Higher Diploma
- Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English and Swahili
- 3-years work experience in leading programmes within a childcare setting
- Proven computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
- Proven skills in programme management and project administration
- Ability to lead a programme and support an international volunteer team
- Skills & experience in project/programme monitoring review, reporting
- Ability to work with limited supervision, take initiative, prioritise and be proactive
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Flexibility and experience of working within a challenging and fast paced environment
- The ability to work within a culturally diverse team spread across different functions
Terms & Conditions.
- This position is an initial 2-year contract with a 3 month probationary period
- Typical working hours are 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday
