Mining Operations based in Tanzania, require an experienced Specialist (Drill & Blast). The incumbent will be responsible for the Safe and efficient operation of all Engineering aspects pertaining to Drill/Blast and geotechnical competence within the Open Pit. Any applicant will require at least 5 years mining experience, at least 2 of which will have to have be in an Open Pit, recently. The position reports to the Chief Mining Manager.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that working conditions are in compliance with Tanzanian Explosive Regulations and Explosive Act and Barrick Health Safety and Environmental site requirements
- Leadership necessary to ensure that employees and contractors adhere to safety standards that exceed world industry standards and any applicable legislation and achieve Zero Lost Time Injury (LTI) Frequency Rate.
· Providing the technical leadership to the Geotechnical, Drill and Blast operations in the Open Pit, in conjunction with the Geotechnical Engineer.
· Ensuring the deployment of drilling rigs to the correct working locations to achieve optimal broken stocks for the load and haul operations.
- Oversee the management of RDT (Hammers, Bits, rods, etc) and control stocks in conjunction with MARC contractors.
- Oversee the efficient contract management of standby and delays related to RDT change outs are minimized to the World Industry Best Practice standards.
· Responsible for the Systems that Review Drillers log sheets, shift reports, Pre-start check lists, Incidents and Accidents reports to ensure that they are correct and to Industry Best Practice standards.
· Ensuring that personnel are adequately deployed to the work areas and can work safely and efficiently
· In conjunction with Maintenance Superintendent Engineer the coordination of Drilling Rig services, maintenance and fuelling to ensure that equipment is utilised efficiently
· Liaising with the Explosives Contractor Blasting Engineer, Senior Production Foreman and Senior Production Geologist to ensure that blast movements are optimal to minimise ore loss and dilution.
· Ensuring that Drilling and Blasting operation is carried out in accordance to plan, procedure and that shared responsibilities with the Explosives Company are complied with
- Participating and supporting Succession Planning within the Mining Team to ensure progressive development of Tanzanian employees to assume positions of increasing accountability.
- In conjunction with the Explosives Contractor; review blast patterns for optimal fragmentation, achieving of correct floor levels, toe and batter angles.
- being pro-active in all aspects of operational safety, efficient utilization of the resources, Continuous Improvement ideas and Projects; and encourage teamwork across the departments
· Deputise for Mine Superintendent as required
· Any other duties that may be assigned to fulfill the overall business objective of African Barrick Gold (ABG).
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
- Tertiary Qualification in Mining and Blasting Competence/Certificate
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years the Mining Industry of which at least 2 years needs to have been recently in Open Pits.
- Experience and knowledge on Down the Hole Hammer (DTH) Top hammer (TH) and RC Drilling operations; Drilling planning ;Drill Rigs selection and performance
- Ability and experience in coaching and mentoring subordinate personnel to ensure consistent levels of service are achieved
- Working knowledge of SURPAC XPAC.DATAMINE, TALPAC and Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and Power Point.
- Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills in the English language.
