Role and Responsibilities Contribute to the implementation, management, and supervision of Medair’s WASH Emergency Response Programme.
Project Overview Medair’s WASH Emergency Response programme includes the provision of safe water and improved sanitation to communities facing emergency level needs. This programme responds to emergencies on an as-needed basis. Currently, the programme responds in several different capacities: installation of surface water treatment system (SWAT) including community training, borehole rehabilitation, health and hygiene promotion (HHP), and provision of emergency latrines.

Key activity areas
Technical
• Assess existing water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion activities in remote areas and recommend actions to be taken.
• Implement programme activities, as member of a team, such as borehole rehabilitation, set-up of emergency water treatment systems, and construction of emergency latrines.
• Ensure the quality construction of all water and sanitation structures, ensuring good maintenance and sustainable processes are put in place.
• Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation assessments against project objectives.
• Seek for the continual improvement of both the technical implementation and the processes of the WASH programme. Quality Management
• Ensure effective integration and mainstreaming of gender into the project in liaison with the WASH Advisor.
• Ensure sectoral integration, learning, sharing and adoption of best practices as outlined in SPHERE guidelines, the Medair Quality Manual, and Medair South Sudan guidelines to ensure quality of projects. Communication
• Regular, open and honest communication, both formal and informal, with the Project Manager and WASH team on progress towards the project objectives, challenges, questions and the security situation.
• Develop and maintain good working relationships with the NGOs, counterparts, and other agencies working in the areas of project implementation.
• Attend meetings with local authorities on behalf of Medair. Refer to the WASH Project Manager before making any commitment on behalf of Medair. HR/Staff Management (in the field)
• Contribute to human resources planning by identifying future personnel needs. Liaise with Project Manager and WASH Advisor in developing terms of work and/or contracts for Sudanese casual labour.
• Work alongside Capacity Building Officer to develop community training materials and ensure the use of participatory methodologies in project implementation.
• Manage team in the field, which includes organizing devotion times, team meetings, making sure that each team member gets the support he/she needs to meet his/her objectives etc. Logistics
• In liaison with the logistics staff and Project Manager, manage procurement and logistics for project-related equipment and material to ensure it is available on site in a timely fashion.
• Ensure careful use, regular servicing and appropriate replacement of all WASH equipment.
• Maintain an accurate record of all field equipment and material stocks for the WASH ER Team.
Qualifications
• Graduate degree in either Water Technology, Hydrology or Civil Engineering
• Graduate degree in Community-based Development desirable
Experience / Competencies
• One year post-graduate work experience in a relevant field
• At least one year in developing country with experience in emergency settings desirable
• Good planning, organisation and reporting skills, so that deadlines will be met
• Strong team player
• Experience with GPS equipment and mapping applications desirable
• Ability to speak Arabic desirable
• Excellent communication skills
• Coaching/teaching skills
• Personal awareness of own stress indicators
• Interest and respect for indigenous knowledge
• Valid driving license

Working Conditions Working and living in locations of relative insecurity in South Sudan. A six-day working week and one day of rest. Eight days of R&R are allocated per work rotation; rotations varies between six and 10 weeks.
