The WHO Centre for Health Development (WHO Kobe Centre, WKC) conducts research on health in development with a focus on how social, economic, environmental and technological determinants impact on health equity, particularly in urban settings. WKC participates in the generation of evidence and knowledge on the links between health, health equity, climate change, and urban governance with reference to WHO strategic objectives. WKC's research is focused on urbanization and health equity. To further develop research and methodologies on urban health equity and promote international exchange in this field, WHO Kobe Centre accepts interns doing research, or willing to participate in on-going projects in the area of urban health. | |
Description of duties: Interns will be invited to participate in different technical activities of the Centre and may act as research assistants and conduct literature reviews, analysis and contribute to reporting and presenting research findings and outcomes. Some of the topics covered are: - Urban health metrics, including the development of measures and methods to assess urban health equity and its associated determinants; - Healthy ageing, with a focus on relevant initiatives in Japan; - Climate change and urban health; - Urban health governance, including inter-sectoral interventions on health, promotion of Smoke Free Cities, and healthy urban planning; - Urban disaster risk reduction. Proposals to carry a research project on these areas are also welcome. | |
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS | |
Education: Applicant should possess a first degree in a public health, medical or social sciences field related to the technical work of WHO, and is currently enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (graduate or post-graduate). . | |
Skills: Core Competencies: - Communicating effectively orally and in writing - Showing willingness to learn from mistakes - Producing and delivering quality results - Working collaboratively with team members - Respecting and promoting difference Appropriate knowledge of literature review and quantitative and qualitative research techniques would be an asset. Familiarity with commonly used computer programmes, including word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation sofware. Knowledge of specialized data analysis programmes may be an advantage. | |
Experience: Experience in research and in drafting reports would be preferred. Experience in the subject area through academic work or research would be an advantage. | |
Languages: Fluency in English required. Knowledge of other UN official languages or Japanese would be an asset. | |
