Context/Scope:
|
- SBL is a total adult beverage company and the second largest alcoholic drinks business in Tanzania. SBL’s business is to produce, market and sell a wide range of alcoholic in Tanzania. SBL is majority owned by East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL).

Financial:

- The most significant financial contribution is the effective management of legal risk e.g. through clear commercial advice to business functions, contract negotiation and documentation, management of litigation, training of staff, and by driving ethical and compliant behaviours to drive sustainable growth.

Leadership Responsibilities:
|
- Proactively provide commercial and pragmatic legal advice and solutions for such aspects of SBL’s business, as are delegated to by the line manager.
- Acting as a leader and role model in SBL. Being a lead driver in ensuring that SBL/Diageo codes and policies are adhered to as well as driving sustainable behaviours where the local laws may be less rigorous than the codes and policies, including provision of on-point training when requested by the line manager.
- Establish close and effective ways of working with marketing and procurement supporting business objectives including an extensive innovation plan and the integration of trade marketing and brand marketing.
- Mastery of marketing, labelling, product and packaging regulation to ensure compliance of all products with applicable requirements, including review of packaging, advertising and promotions to ensure compliance with Diageo Marketing Code and regulatory requirements.
- Full support of DMC, Smartapprove, Gate process and primary contact with IP specialists regarding the management of SBL, EABL and Diageo brands.
- Assisting with drafting and reviewing procurement contracts to ensure adequate contractual protection for SBL.
- Responsible for day to day management of SBL’s litigation portfolio, including adequate and proactive supervision / instruction of external counsel and maintenance of litigation tracker, with the aim of reducing overall exposure.
- Understanding of AML and KYC requirements and supporting the business in ensuring compliance with the group AML policy.

Purpose of role
|
- Enable SBL to achieve its business objectives in a legally compliant way while unlocking commercial opportunity through good practice.
- Preserve value (financial and reputational) by minimising the risk of value leakage and litigation and maintaining compliance with laws and SBL and Diageo Codes.
- Ensure that the line manager and SBL leadership team receive high quality support to achieve jointly agreed objectives.

Top Accountabilities:
|
- Function as a highly effective legal and business partner. Stay particularly close to and lead the provision of legal advice and support required by the SBL marketing and procurement teams.
- Ensure that the line manager has full visibility of all issues and is able to service the legal needs effectively.

Qualifications and Experience Required:
|
- Formal legal qualifications and training.
- Strong commercial law and litigation background.
- A good working knowledge of the following legal areas – contracts, employment, and litigation.
- Good experience in negotiating and drafting commercial contracts (eg procurement and marketing).
- Proactive, open and outward looking attitude.
- Strong inter-personal/communication skills.
- Ability to work confidently and stand ground with more senior managers.
- Strong commercial and pragmatic approach.
- Ability to work with line manager and others as a team.
- At least 2 years post qualification experience as a Tanzanian advocate.
