The Development Writer is responsible for providing written material for donors and potential donors which is informed, accurate, and consistent and meets the needs of the various Development program areas. This position works closely with program managers, attorneys, communications staff, and the entire development team to determine effective messages to meet fundraising goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Writing and Research:
- Work closely with Development staff to identify writing needs.
- Research and review material prepared by Earthjustice attorneys and communication staff to develop written content.
- Stay abreast of updates in program areas to keep written materials current and accurate.
- Monitor and meet publication deadlines in coordination with fundraising calendar.
- Manage a heavy volume of writing assignments on a variety of topics and with tight deadlines.
- Writing material includes content for event handouts, Insider letters, Annual Report articles, fact sheets, brochures, presentations, invitations, acknowledgements, program updates, and email messages.
Program Knowledge and Communication
- Follow issues related to Earthjustice litigation and become fluent in the work of relevant Earthjustice regional offices or programs. Track daily environmental news reports and keep updated files of information on a wide array of environmental issues.
- Develop a working knowledge of Earthjustice's past accomplishments and current programs and budget.
- Track the status of legal cases and programs through monthly briefings and ongoing conversations with program staff.
General Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with development staff on planning for donor cultivation activities, site visits, and special events; share program information with development staff as needed.
- Liaise with the Communications department in order to share information and collaborate on cross-departmental initiatives
- Maintain current and accurate documentation of all written content.
- Attend departmental and organizational retreats for shared planning, team building, and professional development.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum of three (3) years successful experience as a writer/editor.
- Ability to synthesize complex material, translate it into compelling text, and communicate it clearly and succinctly.
- Ability to develop successful proposals and other materials creatively.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including telephone communication.
- Ability to prioritize work and to perform effectively under the pressure of multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including the public and in-house staff.
- Interest in environmental and public health concerns.
- Legal, environmental, and/or scientific background preferred.
