The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI will be working on a number of CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) that bring together CGIAR centers and partners from the research, development and private sector communities around the world.
Job Purpose: ILRI seeks to recruit a bio-respository manager to manage all aspects of the bio-repository samples, infrastructure, database and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) interoperability. Ensure consistent sampling protocols and high quality metadata associated with each sample. Assist in capacity building in field staff, some field travel necessary. Liaises with scientists to ensure derived data and aliquots retain linkage to the primary sapling. Liaise with EOHS office over regulatory issues and with scientists, collaborators and legal office over IP issues.

Responsibilities
- Oversee the cryopreservation, safe storage, accurate labelling and maintenance of samples in the ILRI (Nairobi) Bio-repository
- Liaise with suppliers and engineering department to ensure safe and reliable operation of the low temperature storage systems.
- Ensure maintenance, security and development of storage, sample tracking and metadata databases
- Develop protocols and work with scientists to ensure high quality field sampling, including efficient methods for meta-data capture.
- Ensure that data associated with samples is stored, managed and made accessible in ways that meet emerging CGIAR data curation, exchange, accessibility and intellectual property standards and guidelines
- Work with scientists and technicians to provide the material and information that they require
- Work with scientists to ensure that data systems meet their needs.
- Significant field travel to ensure that best practice is followed in sample collection, handling, aliquoting, transport and data management.
- Supply and control of samples from the Bio-repository to ILRI scientists and collaborators
- Liaise with Health and safety department to ensure adherence to Kenyan and other relevant laws and regulations with respect to sampling, moving, storing, exporting and importing material.
- Liaise with EOHS department to ensure highest standards of health and safety within the cryogenic storage facility
- Liaise with legal department to ensure appropriate IP protection and manage Material Transfer Agreements and other relevant agreements as part of sample meta-data.
- Manage staff and research activities within the Bio-repository
- Ensure that the standard operating procedures used in the Bio-repository conform to institutional, national and international health and safety standards
- Planning and administration of Bio-repository resources and budget
- Provide reports on Bio-repository activities
- Provide training to students and scientists on Bio-repository management
- Manage all budgetary aspects associated with the Bio-repository, including developing and updating storage and the associated costs and sharing these with internal project implementers and external collaborators.
Requirements
- Master’s degree plus 5 years relevant field experience in data systems development, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) use and customisation, laboratory sample management, field sampling
- BSc in Computer Science or biological field.
- Experience in clinical or/and veterinary laboratories.
- Ability to work in complex teams of collaborators
- Knowledge of Server management, database management, database design, web service development, basic biology, health and safety issues associated with biological materials, cryopreservation methodologies, communication with scientists and working with diverse
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Job level and salary: This position is job level 3A with a starting gross salary of KES 164,817 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.
