The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP), is a multi-donor trust funded program administered by the World Bank, comprising a field-based network of over 70 professionals based in four regional teams (Africa, East Asia Pacific, Latin America, and South Asia) managed from a small headquarters team in Washington, DC. The WSP-Africa regional team (WSP-AF) has its HQ in Nairobi, with a sub-regional hub in Dakar.
WSP’s mission is to support the poor in obtaining sustainable access to water and sanitation services. WSP believes that improved water and sanitation services and hygiene practices are integral to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on poverty reduction, health, gender equality, and the environment. WSP is committed to being part of the collective efforts of the development community to achieve Targets 10 and 11 of the MDGs as an intermediate milestone of the vision of the sector. WSP will bring this mission into reality in two ways: (a) Direct means, to support implementation of sector dialogue, knowledge exchange, and capacity building; and (b) Indirect means, to help immediate counterparts and partners to build large-scale sustainable programs, support policy development and sector reforms, engage in action-learning innovative pilot projects that serve in particular the poor. 2. Background for the Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist (Urban)
The urban thematic team within WSP Africa supports the process of urban reform and focuses specifically on the causes of inefficient services and lagging coverage to the poor. In Africa, one of the priority target groups if MDGs are to be realized is the population in the rapidly expanding urban centers of sub-Saharan Africa. The urban thematic team has adopted a strategic framework that will be developed through four platforms focusing on utility reform, government reform, consumer/citizen voice and accountability and partnerships.
WSP-AF is currently seeking to appoint a seasoned WSS professional as the urban thematic leader with extensive and relevant experience of urban water and sanitation development, and who is able to demonstrate professional leadership to our clients and partners. The overall objective of this assignment is to strengthen the strategy, build up the resources, and lead the implementation of WSP-Africa’s urban WSS work program.
The Senior Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) Specialist will coordinate the WSP-AF’s Urban WSS work program in the twelve focus countries. The countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. This post reports to the Africa Principal Regional Team Leader (PRTL). The post is located in Nairobi, Kenya.
