(1). Midwife (1)
Overall objective of the position
The Midwife will be designated to work in Lopa, Lafon and Ikotos Counties in Eastern Equatoria State where Merlin is operating. He/she will be responsible for coordinating and implementing maternal and child health care services within the different communities that are utilizing services from the designated health facility. He/she also participate in the curative, promotive and preventive health services for the facility assigned. The Midwife will work with other key staff to ensure that planned activities are implemented and the community involved in the delivery of health care services.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Responsible for the provision of the basic package for ANC service and emergency obstetric and newborn care.
• Ensure that maternal and neonatal care are implemented, including antenatal care, deliveries, post natal care, family planning, routine neonatal care, and patient health education.
• Provide adequate care to mothers during labor, with emphasis on keeping proper records, adequate use of partograph, and use of drugs and prevention of complications to mother and baby.
• Provide care to mothers during puerperium, and prevention of infection and promotion of breast feeding.
• Manage obstetric emergencies and refer complicated cases as may be required.
• Promptly refer all obstetrics emergencies within the community to the nearby health facility.
• Responsible for the proper functioning of the maternity ward and supervision of staff in the maternity ward.
• Supervise and monitor the performance of traditional birth attendants and maternal community healthcare workers.
• Conduct adolescent sexual reproductive health services.
• Responsible for ensuring the appropriate disposal of healthcare waste.
• Participate in a continuous training of other key staff especially maternal community health care workers, TBAs, women groups and young people.
• Participate in EPI activities including vaccinations, request of vaccines as well as completion of reports
• Provide health education to patients coming to the health facility and plan community based health campaigns.
• Sensitize pregnant women for use of drug distributed during ANC visit.
• Provide daily reports for the admitted patients and ensure that required health information registers are filled appropriately.
• Ensure proper records keeping of activities at the maternity ward, including ANCs and deliveries.
• Collect any vital information on maternal child health from the community, including deliveries, maternal or neonatal deaths.
• Submit regular reports on deliveries, neonatal death, maternal death and other maternal child health indicators as required by the supervisor.
• Take the lead in mobilizing mothers for ANC, with the assistance of community volunteers.
• Participate in conducting community based health care activities including planned outreaches.
• Organize and mobilize the community for reproductive health education sessions in collaboration with TBAs.
• Carry-out any other duties and/or responsibilities assigned by immediate supervisor.
Qualifications
• Certificate in midwifery (MCHW, Community midwifery), Enrolled Nurse from a recognized training institution.
• At least 1-2 years working experience in a busy health facility.
• Ability to communicate in English. Knowledge of local languages including Arabic would be advantageous.
(2). Nurse (1)
Overall objective of the position
The Nurse will be designated to work in Lopa, Lafon and Ikotos Counties in Eastern Equatoria State where Merlin is operating. He/she will be responsible to participate in the curative, promotive and preventive health services for the facility assigned. The nurse will work with other key staff to ensure that planned activities are implemented and the community involved in the delivery of health care services.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Screen patients and organize good patient flow according to first-come-first-seen basis; except for emergency life-threatening conditions who should always be prioritized.
• Give comprehensive nursing care in the IPD and OPD (Dressing and treatment room).
• Provide routine nursing care, such as: the timely administration of both oral and injectable medications, monitoring of vital signs, and other basic nursing procedures.
• Observe and maintain patient confidentiality at all the times, including the protection of health data and information.
• Conduct hand-over of duties to the in-coming nurse on the next shift.
• In the absence of the clinical officer or medical assistant, diagnose and treat simple cases using MoH protocol.
• In the absence of the clinical officer or medical assistant, carry out other clinical duties.
• Refer difficult cases to the medical assistant or clinical officer to another health facility with qualified health staff.
• Conduct daily health education sessions with patients at the health facility, or in the community.
• Provide counseling to patients to ensure adherence to the treatment regimen.
• Complete all patient records, progress notes, medication sheets, and other registers.
• Ensure that patient linens are periodically changed as required.
• Provide supportive supervision or on-the-job training to auxiliary nurses, CHWs and vaccinator.
• In the absence of a pharmacy assistant be responsible for dispensing drugs according to the patient’s prescription.
• Manage all children < 5yrs at the ORT corner for Diarrhea/Dehydration.
• Provide teaching sessions for mothers on the preparation and administration of ORS.
• Assist in conducting drug inventory and completing drug consumption reports and requisition.
• Asses the degree of dehydration among patients and provide appropriate treatment using the MOH protocol.
• Clean and disinfect all utensils used in preparing, storing and drinking of ORS.
• Monitor patients condition during administration of ORS taking note of the degree of dehydration, temperature, general condition, and volume of stools.
• Conduct routine and outreach activities, including immunization, health promotion, and community mobilization.
• Assist in deworming and Vit A supplementation for children < 5yrs.
• Ensure that patients that come to the health facility are counseled and know what treatment they are receiving
• Conduct growth monitoring and nutrition screening for all children < 5yrs old.
• Participate in the collection of health information used to generate reports.
• Adhere to universal precautions at all time, including proper instrument processing.
• Manage the patients in conformity with the prescription from the clinician.
• Assist in the preparation and sterilization of the dressing equipment using the autoclave prior to any procedure.
• Receive all the decontaminated items from departments for sterilization.
• Maintain inventory of all the various packs to be sterilized, or passing through the department.
Qualifications
• Certificate in Nursing, certified/Enrolled Nurse, from a recognized training institution.
• At least 1-2 years working experience in a busy health facility.
• Ability to communicate in English. Knowledge of local languages including Arabic would be advantageous.
• Excellent in liaison abilities and good communication skills.
