Railway Children is a UK based development agency delivering support programmes for children living alone and at risk on the streets across the world.

We are currently hiring for 4 team members - three to work in our own project Kivuko, and one to work in our partner Caretakers of the Environment Tanzania - to deliver support services to children and young people on the streets in Mwanza and to vulnerable families and communities across the city.

Key Requirements

You will have the necessary qualifications relevant to the post for which you are applying. You will most likely have experience of working in a NGO but most importantly you will have the passion and drive to make a difference to the lives of children living on the streets.

Project - Railway Children Africa

Social Worker – Family Work

Qualifications: Formal qualifications in social work or the equivalent in working experience

Responsibilities

Family worker with own case load of community target families as well as reunification families - with the focus being reunifying street children with their families and preventing other children from going to the streets. Responsible for working directly with families and coordinating all support and services for each family on caseload.

Identify and document specific needs in families in accordance with support available (agriculture, school, vocational, business) and refer to relevant social worker. 

Assessment, monitoring progress and goal setting with each family 
Build positive relationships with families and children Provide therapeutic support 

Liaise closely with street workers or centre staff in co-managing caseloads 
Liaise and coordinate with stakeholders relevant to family (neighbours, village, social welfare etc) 
Street outreach work to meet with children in case load who are in the streets 
Keep case files updated with continuous follow-up information of children and families 
Monitor and evaluate the family reintegration work together with manager 
Plan family work and support together with each family 

Kivuko Project - Railway Children Africa

Position: Volunteer Street Worker – Youth

Qualifications: Formal qualifications in social work or the equivalent in working experience

Responsibilities

Assist the youth team to deliver the “youth association model” aiming to help youth to become rehabilitated, find a sustainable livelihood and leave street life.

Make contact and build positive relationship with youth living on the streets 
Participate in weekly youth groups meetings, and share minutes and issues raised from the meetings; provide quick response to the urgent matters arising, report on youths progress and challenges 
Assist staff during trainings and workshops for business and capacity building to the youth 

Listening and being responsive to the needs of youth on the streets; providing emotional support 
Together with team, continuously strategize and prioritise in the delivery of youth work; maintain weekly reports 

Maintain positive relationships with street workers from other organisations and other relevant stakeholders 

Assist youth team in setting up contracts with colleges, individual craftspeople and companies to receive youth/family members for training placements or employment. Maintain relationships with placements. 
Together with youth worker and business support staff, organise trade choosing workshops when needed 

To assist in the professional development of assigned beneficiaries with the objective of them becoming employed or self-employed in a certain trade 
Monitor and document progress of individuals in placements and report back to the assigned family worker or youth worker 

Assist in documentation and data entry 

Caretakers of the environment Tanzania (COET)

Position: Community Social Worker

Qualifications: Formal qualifications in social work or the equivalent in working experience

Responsibilities

Family worker with own case load of community target families and women's self help groups (Vicoba) - with the focus being and preventing children from going to the streets. Responsible for working directly with families and coordinating all support and services for each family case or self help group.

Identify and document specific needs in families in accordance with support available (agriculture, school, vocational, business) and refer to relevant social worker. 

Assessment, monitoring progress and goal setting with each family 
Build positive relationships with families and children Provide therapeutic support 

Liaise closely with street workers or centre staff in co-managing caseloads 
Liaise and coordinate with stakeholders relevant to family (neighbours, village, social welfare etc) 
Street outreach work to meet with children in case load who are in the streets 
Keep case files updated with continuous follow-up information of children and families 
Monitor and evaluate the family reintegration work together with manager 
Plan family work and support together with each family Form and facilitate women's self help groups in target 

communities, regularly attend meetings, provide training in entrepreneurship, facilitate provision of grants and loans 

Kivuko Project - Railway Children Africa

Position: Volunteer Agricultural worker

Qualifications: Formal education or experience in agriculture, preferably organic / bio intensive agriculture

Responsibilities

Coordinate and delivers all support in bio-intensive agriculture for beneficiaries across all the programmes with the aim of increasing food security and livelihoods in families.

Work with individual family members (target families and reunified families) to build their skills in bio-intensive agriculture and set up their own gardens/plots over time through regular support visits 
Liaise closely with responsible social worker Set up and manage show plot 

Organise and deliver training in bio-intensive agriculture for groups of family members 
Assess family needs for tools and seeds etc and organise for the purchase and distribution of these together with admin 

Monitor and document families progress and achievements in agriculture and report back to social worker
