Duty station: Remote work with an initial and final trip to Addis Ababa Duration of contract: Five months
Specific Tasks 1. Develop an outline of the technical content to be covered in each module 2. Develop a work-plan based on approved technical content 3. Develop a series of e-learning nutrition data analysis and report writing modules, preferably using software such as Adobe Captivate. 4. Present the draft materials to a steering committee to obtain inputs prior to finalization 5. Facilitate a Training of Trainers on the materials in Ethiopia
Methodology
The consultant should start from the point of a finalized nutrition survey report, and use this as the target to be reached with the modules. The consultant will need to first create the sample report (a questionnaire will be provided), along with dummy datasets that are used to create the report. From here, the modules should be developed based on the steps required to go from a raw dataset to the finalized report. The software utilized should be SPSS, Epi-Info (or ENA), MS Excel and MS Word. The number of modules and topics can be discussed, depending on the time required to complete a module, etc. There should be quizzes/tests built into the modules as well as a certificate of completion for each module. Module topics should be along the lines of:
- Basic concepts of nutrition data analysis and how they inter-relate o Introduction Sample nutrition survey report o Understanding a situation and how to identify information needs o Conceptual framework o Triple A o Prepare dummy tables / graphs to meet information needs o Develop an analysis plan based on information needed (research questions) What is the level of malnutrition? Who are the malnourished Where are they What factors are associated with being malnourished, etc. o Types of variables Dependent vs. independent Continuous vs. categorical
- An initial overview of SPSS and its layout o Opening, Saving o File structures: household versus individual o File, edit, view, etc. o Options o Variables vs. cases o Variable view vs. data view o Name, Type, Width, Decimals, Label, Values, Missing o Sorting o Output Go over information on output viewer File name and location Type of output you entered Cases, sums of cases Output table Percent versus valid percent Syntax commands Log on right hand side of screen
- Data cleaning skills o Basics of what data cleaning is o Frequencies, descriptive stats, o histograms, scatterplots, o sorting, plausible checks o outliers o expected associations o Examples of height, weight, age heaping, etc.
- Data Transformations and Analysis (varying dis-aggregations) o Z-scores Brief theory, calculation and reference population Differences between new WHO and NCHS o Nutrition Indicators (ENA, Epi-info) Exporting Calculating prevalence o Water/sanitation (improved vs. unimproved) o Food security (FCS, CSI) o IYCF o Analysis Associations (contextual factors) Compare means
- Report creation o Tables – how to create in Excel/Word o Graphing – how to create in Excel o Basics of report writing (Word) Identifying target audience How to draft a clear message Creating summaries There should be clear instructions developed to accompany the series of training modules, both in written and electronic format. UNICEF Communications Section will facilitate appropriate UNICEF branding.
Expected Deliverables 1. Outline of technical content for each module with work plan for development 2. Sample nutrition survey report 3. Reference datasets 4. A series of e-learning modules on nutrition data analysis following approved outline. These should be reproducible in CD/DVD format. Should include appropriate instructions. 5. Facilitated 5-day training for in-country staff
Reporting Travel to Ethiopia will be required at the beginning of the project so that there is dialogue with the reporting officer and in-country specialists to fully understand scope of work and expectations. An outline of the technical content along with the work plan should be drafted and agreed upon, identifying a timeframe for various modules. This should include an outline of the topics covered, exercises, quizzes, etc. Once the work plan is agree upon, the consultant will work remotely to record the modules. Frequent communication will need to be established to ensure expectations are consistently met. Modules should be sent to the UNICEF Reporting Officer for approval before payment is received. Once all modules complete, the consultant will need to travel to Ethiopia to orient in-country staff with their operation. A “training of trainers” should be facilitated by the consultant for key in-country staff.
