Photographer - UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. In South Sudan, UNDP is committed to promoting good governance at all levels of society and building coalitions for actions on issues critical to sustainable human development. In all activities, UNDP encourages the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, and all activities are undertaken in close collaboration with the Government, other UN agencies and other development stakeholders.
In support of UNDP Publications, advocacy and outreach activities, the Communications Unit requires photography services for use in a variety of communications and advocacy materials. A contract may be awarded to one or more service providers for one or more jobs. UNDP will agree with the photographer(s) on the number of days required for each location or/and each occasion. Photographers should also supply a daily rate that will be applied for any extensions or reductions in time spent on the job.

Duties and Responsibilities

This particular assignment covers selected areas in different areas in which UNDP is working across South Sudan. Under the guidance and supervision of the Communication Unit, the photographer shall provide the following deliverables:
1. Provide high resolution digital photographs, supplied by 30 October 2011:
  • A minimum of 10 publishable photographs per day engaged.
  • All photography should be digital, using professional quality equipment. It is expected that the photographer will use a digital SLR camera with a minimum of 10 megapixels and high quality lenses; a separate, high quality flash unit is required for interiors.
  • Final, high-resolution images and captions are required to be delivered electronically within 5 working days of return to the point of origin. We seek high resolution images suitable for high resolution printing.
2. Full, detailed captions in English for each photograph, provided as a separate text document, specifying accurately the following details:
  • The date of the photograph
  • The location of the photograph
  • The names of the main subject(s)
  • The job titles and organizations represented, of the main subjects
  • A brief description of the activities represented
  • The name of the project involved, or other relevant context
  • The name of the photographer.
Job details
  • The expected locations and approximate timeframes for the photography work being recruited are below.
  • The dates are tentative, but all jobs are planned to take place in the month of November 2011 and is likely to occupy at least 15 days of professional photography.
  • Locations are subject to change by UNDP.
  • The length of time required in each location is subject to confirmation by UNDP. The number of days of professional work required below is thus indicative.
  • The photographer should indicate their professional daily rate, which will be used to adjust the value of the contract in case there is a change in the number of days required.
  • UNDP reserves the right to change the timeframes and itineraries of these jobs.
  • Transport to and from the UNDP field offices and other locations within South Sudan will be provided at UNDP expense.

Required Skills and Experience

Submitting bids

  • The photographer(s) should indicate his professional daily rate, in case the job is extended or shortened.
  • The photographer(s) should also indicate how much he would charge for any non-working days in which you travel or wait in duty stations when not taking photographs.
  • Note that UNDP will only pay a professional daily rate for the days in which active photography is required.
  • Provide us with 5 relevant samples of your photography taken within the last year.
  • Indicate your years of experience as a professional photographer, and your experience with the UN and development topics.
UNDP Terms of use:
  • Unlimited use of all photographs supplied.
  • Unlimited storage of the photographs by UNDP
  • Rights to transfer the photographs to third parties for their use.
Photographer Rights:
  • Retain copies of the photographs for personal use (for example, in their portfolio).
  • Assert their moral right to be identified as the author of the photographs.
UNDP will provide to Contracted Photographer(s) Only:
  • Letter(s) of introduction to support the photographer(s) obtaining travel authorization to the targeted areas.
  • UNDP will provide local transport or pay reasonable costs for in-country transport where needed, including the use of a UN vehicle and driver if required and available.
  • UNDP will endeavour to provide the photographer(s) with support for local logistics, including identifying and booking hotels as needed.
  • UNDP will provide contact information for local representatives and/or the people likely to feature in photographs, plus a description of the underlying project and UNDP’s interest.
Other Requirements:
  • The photographer must observe Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS) as communicated by the United Nations for the location(s) visited.
  • Photography must be limited to the subjects, people, infrastructure and other elements agreed with UNDP.
  • The photographer(s) must be mindful of local sensitivities. In many locations it is prohibited to photograph military or government installations such as airports and the photographer(s) must take care to observe these limitations and comply with local authorities where necessary.

Notes:

  • No photographer(s) should incur expenses without express authorization from UNDP. UNDP will not be responsible for penalties and charges incurred without authorization.

  • Interested candidates should apply by sending their Letter of Interest and CV (preferably United Nations Personal History Form (P.11 Form)) to: bids.juba@undp.org or drop a sealed envelope marked Confidential with the title of the position at UNDP Office in Juba by latest 5:00hrs Juba Time on 30th September, 2011. Alternatively, interested candidates can submit their applications online through the UNDP job website.

Note:

Applicants should submit their financial proposal for performing this task. Contracts based on daily fee - Payments shall be made to the Individual Consultant based on the number of days worked at the agreed daily fee.
The financial proposal should specify the daily fee, which includes all other costs like airfare, per diems, etc. For evaluation purpose, the financial offer should provide breakdown of all costs. While preparing your proposal, kindly note that the standard for air travel authorized by UNDP for individual subscribers is economy class. Individual consultants will be evaluated based on the methodology: Lowest price and technically compliant offer.
