Egypt has the largest, most densely settled population among the Arab countries. The total area of the country covers approximately 1 001 449 km2. However, much of the land is desert and only 6% of Egypt’s area is inhabited. Egypt has a population of 82.999,393, Cairo is the capital and as well the biggest city of the country (population of around 17.290.000), followed by Alexandria, Port Said and Suez.
Concerning child rights and child protection in Egypt, the country ratified the UNICEF Convention of Child Rights. Since 1996, an Egyptian law for Children has been settled which should protect children who work and children “at risk”. Egyptian and International NGOs have been working together with the key authorities concerned (MoHP, National Council of Childhood and Motherhood, Ministry of Social Solidarity) in order to enhance the application of the Child Law and relevant policies concerning the Protection of Children rights. The general objective of the project is to improve the health status of CSS in greater Cairo. The project started in 2009 and will finish in April 2012. We are in the final period of the implementation, which will include a final evaluation and the closure of the project. MdM works in partnership with 6 Egyptian NGOs and Basma Clinic, a clinic dedicated to the CSS located in a University Hospital. In addition, we have recently developed a partnership with the department of School Age Medicine in MOHP through the collaboration with 6 Primary Health Care Centres. The objective of the project is to improve access to health of the CSS in great Cairo through support to local stakeholders and networking
MdM wishes to be present in Egypt, and the team is working to define a new project about a new thematic, enventually in a new geographical area in Egypt. Mental health is one of the helath needs identified, and some competences on this issue could be helpful. The medical coordinator will be fully involved in the designing of the new intervention.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Medical Coordinator will work under the supervision and in close collaboration with the MdM General Coordinator in Cairo. The Medical Coordinator will directly supervise the Technical Team composed by: - 3 Medical Officers - 1 Mental Health Officer - 1 IEC Officer Indirectly, he/she will be following up the team of the Basma Clinic composed by medical doctors and nurses and the social workers of the partner NGOs through the different project coordinators involved in the partners’ projects.
More specifically: - Taking part to the planification of the activities; he/she participates in supervising and organising its implementation. - Participating in the program’s continuous assessment; in supervising and organising its implementation. - Participating in the management of the national technical team and organising its activity at the operational level. - Supervising, organising and participating in the implementation of the mission’s medical activities. - Is responsible of integrating a public health approach in the program’s planning, assessment and implementation. - Is in charge and is guarantor of the accurate and ethical medical content throughout program’s planning and activities implementation. - Writing technical reports (final and intermediary), in the respect of donors’ requirements. - Writing a monthly activities report to the General Coordinator, the Desk Officer and the Responsible of the Mission. - Participating in the management of the mission’s budget on medical items and medical related activities. - Taking part in the discussions, negotiation and in the development of agreements and contracts with local partners and authorities, in the medical field if needed. - Participate with the general coordinator in drafting new project proposals; - Is in charge of the exchange of medical / technical information with the head office; he supervises the respect of procedures and of the obligation to give information within his team.
