Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the ECA Library and Information Services Section of the ICT, Science and Technology Division (ISTD) of the Economic Commission for Africa.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Chief Librarian, and direct supervision of the Technical Services Team Leader, the Library Assistant, within delegated authority, will be responsible for the following duties:
Assists in the review of sources to identify appropriate materials that meet the information needs of the Organization and its information clientele.
Assists in cataloguing operations, in particular, performing descriptive cataloguing and copy-cataloguing functions.
Assists in the development and maintenance of relevant repositories, databases and online information portals, keeping data accurate and current, and preparing new material as needed.
Provides assistance in obtaining updated materials, in connection with research requests by library patrons.
Provides statistical data for assessing usefulness and relevance of posted materials.
Provides technical support and instruction to library patrons in using electronic resources and reference tools.
Prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages and assists in the development and management of the Library Web Site and other multimedia information products.
Liaises with ITSS to ensure regular backup for library repositories, databases on various platforms and performs other routine maintenance procedures that ensure the integrity of library data.
Provides technical support for library digitization operations as well as administration of the Integrated Library Management System.
Co-ordinates work and/or participates in training of junior support staff.
Provides administrative support for the section and unit chief and undertakes other duties as assigned.

Ex, digital library development, website development and application of multimedia. , administration of Library Information Management systems. Ability to undertake library research, maintain records in a systematic fashion, and retrieve necessary materials with maximum speed and accuracy. Ability to respond to changing requirements and assignments, and ability to apply good judgment in the context of the assignments. Education
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A post secondary education in Library Sciences or related fields is highly desirable. Must pass the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT), at ECA in Addis Ababa.
Work Experience
A minimum of 6 years of progressive hands-on experience in library work, archives, information network administration or related field. Experience in the use of cataloguing standards (ex. AARC2, UDC, LCSH), Integrated Library Systems, multimedia applications, website development, and administration of information management systems are essential.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French or Arabic is an advantage.
Assessment Method
The assessment method for this job opening is technical test and competency based interview.
