A. Environmental policy analyst: Rio+20 Sustainable Development Governance
Duties/Responsibilities
The researcher will analyze sustainable development governance issues related to Rio+20 (UN Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Brazil in 2012). The Rio+20 meeting has 2 main themes, the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (IFSD), and the Green Economy. Responsibilities will focus mainly on IFSD issues, but may include linkages between IFSD and the Green Economy. The researcher will also contribute to the Governance and Capacity Group’s research on regional environmental governance in East Asia. In addition, the researcher should be able to contribute broadly to the Group’s research and activities.
The researcher should be able to:
- Write publishable quality articles, research papers, policy briefs, and reports
- Make presentations
- Develop funding proposals for research
- Contribute to the planning and organisation of meetings and conferences
- Contribute to other relevant IGES work
Qualifications
1 Academic background
a. Ph.D., ABD, or Master’s degree in public policy, political science, international relations, public administration, environmental policy, sustainable development, or related field
2 Understanding and experience
a. Research and/or practical experience regarding sustainable development governance and transboundary environmental issues at the global and regional levels
b. Understanding of the international relations of East Asia, especially relating to the environment
c. Strong analytical, research, writing, and presentation ability
d. Ability to conduct analysis from comparative and multilevel governance perspectives
3 Willingness and ability
a. Willingness to conduct policy-oriented research and to combine research with active involvement in policymaking processes
b. Candidates should be highly motivated, enthusiastic, and capable of working both independently and as team members
c. Ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders, government officials, NGOs and other research institutes
d. Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment
4 PC skills
a. Basic PC skills, including MS Office
5 Language proficiency
a. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
b. Excellent oral and written communication skills in Japanese is preferable, but strong candidates without Japanese language ability will be seriously considered
B. Environmental Policy Analyst: Regional air pollution
Duties/Responsibilities
This research project aims to explore how to improve regional cooperation on air pollution issues in East Asia. In particular, it will focus on analysis of related domestic factors (including political, economic, and others) affecting potential cooperation. Research will include comparative case studies in various countries and will involve conducting interviews with policymakers and other stakeholders. This research should also contribute to the Governance and Capacity Group’s broader research on environmental governance in East Asia. In addition, the researcher should be able to contribute broadly to the Group’s research and activities.
The researcher should be able to:
- Write publishable quality articles, research papers, policy briefs, and reports
- Make presentations
- Develop funding proposals for research
- Contribute to the planning and organisation of meetings and conferences
