War Child’s vision is of a world in which the lives of children are no longer torn apart by war. Established in 1993 as a response to the brutal effects of conflict on children during the Balkans war, War Child now works in Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and is working hard to support and improve the protective environment for children and young people who live with a combination of insecurity, poverty and exclusion in conflict affected locations. With a focus on service delivery, investment in local protection structures and systems, and advocacy, War Child is making a massive difference to the lives of many thousands of children. It is a multi-award winning organisation and has been referenced as best practice by DFID, Comic Relief and the Prime Minister.
War Child has grown rapidly over the past four years. Income has increased from approximately £1m in 2005 and will reach £5m by the end of 2011. This increase in income has taken direct beneficiary reach to over 28,000 in 2010 with a further 71,000 helped indirectly. The organisation is well placed: with a secure three year Partnership Programme Arrangement with DFID as part of a consortium; as Deutsche Bank’s Charity of the Year; a new programme in Central African Republic; a financial position that is solid; and a diversified income prospect base for 2012. War Child is seeking to expand its impact to deliver its mission to children and young people in ten of the worst conflict affected countries. Maintaining and further developing the quality of the work will be essential in growing this impact. The new CEO will use the next eighteen months to consolidate their successes and prepare for the next phase of growth in their impact.
