Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the African Minerals Development Center of the Special Initiatives Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Senior Policy and Regulatory Frameworks Specialist.
Responsibilities
Designs and conducts policy research and analysis in mineral development to develop policy recommendations through the use of relevant tools and policy research methodologies;
Prepares global, regional and national mineral sector analytical reports taking care that these are relevant to and provide a basis for advising national governments on mineral policy and economic development issues;
Identifies emerging issues and trends at the global, regional and national levels that affect the African mineral sector through constant monitoring of developments in the mineral sector;
Supports and mentors junior staff through a constant review of their work and providing feedback;
Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, and training workshops on mineral policy and development issues by assembling relevant materials for differentiated stakeholders.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in earth science, economics, mineral law or development related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
At least 7 years of progressive experience in mineral policy research, analysis and formulation especially as applied to the mineral sector. Senior level experience in programme and project planning, and work in regional and sub-regional organizations are also required.
Languages
English and French are the working Languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English or French is required. Working knowledge of the other is an advantage. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her, in this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. This vacancy is subject to availability of post.
This is a project post. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds.
