Persistent Energy Group (PEG) is recruiting an experienced, entrepreneurial-minded accountant to lead the implementation of its global accounting and financial control operations from New York. The initial title for this position will be Financial Manager, and the successful candidate will have the potential to become group CFO within 12-18 months from the start date.
Persistent Energy Group is an established and fast-growing US based company. Through its African subsidiaries, PEG installs solar-powered energy systems in off-grid communities in Tanzania and Ghana. PEG sells services to customers (i.e., lighting, mobile phone charging, radio, fans and televisions) using the solar power generated by its assets. PEG seeks to be the premier provider of energy services to off-grid households and businesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
Position. PEG is in the process of integrating its Tanzanian and Ghanaian operations and their accounting systems (both operate on Xero). PEG will seek to acquire additional businesses as part of its growth strategy. PEG needs to (i) develop procedures and practices to account for its investment in income-generating assets, and (ii) customize the interface between accounting software, inventory management systems (i.e. Unleashed) and PEG’s operating systems (proprietary software) that collect service fees from customers, and monitor grids and stand alone systems, etc. PEG is recruiting an entrepreneurial-minded accountant who is (i) capable of leading this design and implementation of systems and procedures and who will be (ii) responsible for all accounting and control functions.
Work location. PEG’s Financial Manager will be located at PEG headquarters in lower Manhattan, New York and will be required to spend time at PEG offices in Dar es Salaam and Accra, vetting and/or hiring, training and supervising local bookkeeping staff who will report to the Financial Manager.
Opportunity. PEG is an established venture business pursuing a business model with a highly positive financial, social and environmental impact. PEG seeks to be a primary provider of clean energy services to households in sub-Saharan Africa – a $10bn / year market. The successful candidate has the potential to become CFO, and shareholder, of this business as it grows.
Qualifications. Applicants should have the following qualifications:
- CPA or Chartered Accountant with several years of experience in a professional accounting firm.
- Experience in a start-up or fast growing company operating in several countries & currencies is a huge plus.
- Sophistication in setting up and implementing accounting systems (i.e. Xero), as well as interfaces with inventory management software (i.e. Unleashed), CRM solutions.
- Experience overseeing bookkeeping and control functions in small business enterprises.
- Applicants must be entrepreneurial: PEG needs a practical, problem-solving financial manager who can integrate financial integrity with business-advancing focus.
- Desire to grow with PEG into a CFO position; desire for equity incentives and not merely salary
- This is a New York City based position; the applicant must have work and residence permit in the US.
- Applicants must be willing and able to travel overseas (Africa).
Compensation. Negotiable, will include salary and equity components, in line with compensation typical for venture companies.
