BACKGROUND
The objective of the Statistics Division in ESCWA is to improve the production, harmonization and dissemination of quality
demographic, social, economic and environmental indicators, including indicators on societal development and progress towards
development goals, and gender-sensitive indicators, in order to facilitate evidence-based policymaking by decision makers and
civil society.
OBJECTIVES
The overall objective of the consultancies is to contribute in the preparation of specialized studies and reports of the Statistics Division in
ESCWA in the below-mentioned focus areas. The assignments may range from one to three months.
National Accounts: Providing capacity building in the implementation of SNA 2008; Collecting annual national accounts statistics from
ESCWA member countries on GDP aggregates at current and constant prices; GDP growth; Gross value added; Final consumption
expenditure, Capital Formation; Publishing the annual “National Accounts Studies of the ESCWA Region, Bulletin” and other related
studies and reports.
International Economic Classification: Supporting the application of the latest international classification such as the International
Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC); The Central Product Classification (CPC), Harmonized Commodity
Description and Coding System (HS), Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP), Classification of Functions of
Government (COFOG) etc.
Trade and Industry Statistics: Compiling and disseminating yearly statistics on external trade including annual trade growth rates, the
total values of imports and exports by sections of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS); Intraregional trade on
imports and exports and the direction of trade on imports and exports of each member country; Capacity building on industry statistics.
The International Comparison Program (ICP) 2011: Engaging in methodological research and review, survey activities and data
processing and analysis in the areas of price statistics and national accounts and related fields with a view to estimating purchasing power
parities (PPPs) of the ESCWA member countries.
Energy and Environment Statistics: Developing environment statistics including water, waste, air pollution, land cover/land use and
biodiversity and applying methodologies for the implementation of the system for environmental economic accounting (SEEA); assisting in
energy statistics compilation and preparation of annual energy balance, tracking the flows of energy products from primary sources to final
consumption.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Statistics or Social Sciences, with a focus on any of the
above-mentioned fields. A PhD is preferable.
Experience: A significant number of years of relevant experience in any of the above-mentioned fields. Experience in the Western Asia
region is highly desirable.
Languages: English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, proficiency in oral
and written English is required; fluency in Arabic is desirable.
