The UNDP Regional Coordination Unit (RCU) for Africa, located in Pretoria, is linked to the UNDP Regional Service Centre located in Johannesburg. The RCU serves to assist countries in the Region (Africa) to mobilize resources to address their development needs in the fields of Biodiversity and Ecological Services (including Sustainable Land Management), International Waters, Climate Change Mitigation and Climate Change Adaptation and to meet their commitments under the various international environmental conventions that they are parties to. The RCU assists countries in Region to move towards a low carbon, climate change resilient and sustainable development path. The goal of the Energy and Environment Practice at UNDP Johannesburg Regional Centre is to strengthen national capacities to manage the environment in a sustainable manner while ensuring adequate protection for the poor. UNDP’s Environment and Energy strategy in Africa has four pillars: - Mainstreaming environment and energy into national and local development policies and plans.
- Mobilizing environmental finance – assisting countries with assessing their environmental financing needs, accessing, sequencing and combining different sources of environmental funds to support market development for climate and environmentally friendly technologies.
- Promoting adaptation to climate change - mainstreaming climate change risk management into national development strategies
- Expanding access to environment and energy services for the poor - empowerment and strengthened capacity for local action.
