Acacia Mining seeks to employ an experienced Geotechnical Engineer based at Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. This role reports to the Section Leader Geotechnical and the role holder will be accountable to provide geotechnical services to mine operations so that ground control and ore extraction can proceed safely, efficiently and cost effectively guided by the Ground Control Management Plan.
This is a permanent/ fixed term contract role, with the work roster being six weeks on and three weeks off.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Ensure safe work practices by attending compulsory safety courses and meetings, use of required PPE, incident/accident reporting and ensuring total adherence to all Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental Policies, as well as other policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Advise and assist mine operations on ground control methods to ensure optimum utilization of the available ore reserves and human resources engaged in ground control activities.
• Use geotechnical mapping and logging to classify rock mass and apply the data on stope design and mine layouts.
• Use structural stability methods, empirical assessment and numerical modelling to arrive at ultimate support systems and determine optimum pillar sizes and stoping sequences to ensure stability of underground structures.
• Carry out regular monitoring of support systems (e.g. pull tests) to ensure that the recommended support is adhered to.
• Measure rock strength, rock stress changes, deformation and monitoring seismic activities using different Rock Mechanics instrumentation to ensure stability of underground and surface structures.
• Provision of geotechnical information for mine planning and design requirements to ensure compliance with the site Ground Control Management Plan and related standards and procedures.
• Perform numerical modeling for mine workings and interpretation thereof.
• Updating geotechnical model and domains and generate 3D mine CAD/Datamine geotechnical joint data in stoping areas.
• Inspection of life of mine infrastructure (ramps, shafts and workshops etc.).
• Compilation of Weekly Geotechnical reports on geotechnical data, analyses, risk assessment and inspection.
• Weekly Database Management Quality Control - QA/QC of geotechnical logging and mapping data and electronic filing thereof.
• Regularly updating the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) so as to improve the quality of service offered to the mining department.
• Design and monitoring of ground support, backfill systems, and control instrumentation.
• Provide Geotechnical input for new projects (new mining areas, changes in current plan etc.).
• Assist with the training and development of less experienced team members.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Qualification Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering preferably with a specialization in Ground Control, Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics.
• Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering will be an added advantage.
Experience Requirements:
• Minimum of 5 years post graduate industry underground mining experience preferably in precious metals using long-hole stoping mining method with paste backfill system.
• Must have a good operating knowledge and interpretation skills of popular numerical modeling tools such as DIPS, UNWEDGE, MAP3D and PHASE2 etc.
Skills / Knowledge Requirements:
• Stability assessment of underground workings and infrastructure.
• Comprehensive knowledge of rock mass classification systems and joint data interpretation and analysis.
• Numerical modeling of mine workings and interpretation.
• Provision of professional input into mine planning and design, through comprehensive knowledge of conventional narrow-vein, cut-an-fill and longhole mining methods.
• Able to work with limited supervision.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Safety conscious.
• English and Swahili fluency.
