Title: Community Nutrition Liaison Officer
Reports to: Project Coordinator
Duty Station: Mbeya
Position Summary: To provide counseling to patients with medical problems affected by nutritional status and nutrition education to patients with a focus on disease prevention.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides nutritional counseling on an individual basis upon referral by clinicians as a part of the clinical treatment plan.
Advise patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans and diet modifications, and food selection and preparation.
Counsels’ individuals and groups of patients on basic principles of good nutrition, healthy eating habits and meal planning, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life
Develops and implements new nutrition programs, activities and services based on patients needs
Develops and maintains print and non – print educational materials on nutritional topics for use by patients and clinicians
Provides in – service educational programs for clinicians on nutritional topics as needed
Communicates with the community on behalf of Baylor-Tanzania for the purpose of ensuring that ongoing partnerships between Baylor-Tanzania and the home based care (HBC) activities are continuous and any barriers removed
Conducts community meetings for the purpose of gaining information and and/or discussing needs of the children and families affected by malnutrition
Coordinates and engages community members in activities to improve health care and treatment associated with children and families affected by malnutrition.
Supports development and implementation of malnutrition programs for community members to increase their knowledge and awareness of nutrition to children and best practices in communication to empower them to engage and mobilize communities and relevant support agencies.
Identifies opportunities for Baylor-Tanzania staff/community members to engage directly with each other e.g. community events
Maintains regular communication between Baylor-Tanzania staff and community members as well as other stakeholder representatives
Seeks and engages with community groups that need to access Baylor-Tanzania’s focus services and assist with cultural issues that may otherwise hinder full participation in malnutrition
Updates the Baylor-Tanzania team members and other relevant stakeholders of any cultural or social issues that may affect individual and/or community members participation in malnutrition.
Assists in coordinates setting up Baylor-Tanzania community events
Maintains records of contacts and community activities
Develop public information and educational materials on nutrition and the services offered by Baylor Tanzania in line with Baylor Tanzania’s strategic objectives.
Review and implement advocacy strategies that will promote a vibrate civil society that promotes nutrition preventative measures and adherence to care and treatment for malnutrition in line with Baylor-Tanzania’s advocacy and communications guidelines.
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Graduate from a recognized University with a degree in nutrition or its equivalent in nutrition education with licensure as a registered dietitian Minimum of two years experience in the field
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of nutritional care and counseling
Skills in planning nutritional education programs.
Skills in involving potential programs users in program activities.
Ability to identify nutritional education needs to develop appropriate programs to meet those needs.
Ability to communicate ideas effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to deal effectively with individuals and groups.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients, community leaders and staff.
