Position: Six (6) District Extension Officers
Duty station: Njombe, Mufindi, Kilolo, Makete, Ludewa and Kilombero districts. Duration: Initially 2 years to be extended to 4 years with proven performance.
The Private Forest Programme (PFP) aims at increasing rural income in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania through developing sustainable and profitable forestry and value addition in the entire production value chain from quality seeds to quality products in the markets.
The programme will be implemented through Tree Growers Associations (TGAS) to be organized in the project area. PFP will support sustainable and participatory land use planning, and develop the capacities of tree growers, SMEs and extension and business service providers.
The programme will be implemented in Njombe, Mufindi, Kilolo, Makete, Ludewa and Kilombero districts. The programme key implementing entities and partners include the Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism, the Tanzania Forest Services, District Councils of the area, training and research organizations, TGAs and their district apex entities as well as medium and large-scale private forestry plantation owners/wood processors. The programme is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
The Private Forestry Programme is implemented by a consortium formed by Indufor Oy and Niras Finland. The programme started it operations in January 2014 and is looking for competent District Extension Officers.
Qualifications and Experience
A Diploma in Forestry. Experience in developing and conducting training to forestry smallholders farmers in the field. Strong experience in planning, establishing and managing smallholder forest nurseries and plantations. Experience in business management and entrepreneurship and putting them in practice among TGA/smallholder environment. Hands on experience in participatory community based monitoring of smallholder-related field activities. Good problem/conflict solving skills. Ability to work with other stakeholders, including district authorities, private companies and NGOs. Excellent oral and written communication skills both in English and Swahili. Minimum of three years experience in similar position.
Specific Duties and responsibilities Include:
i. To create awareness and train stakeholders in target villages on the need for the Tree Growers Associations (TGAs) and participate in their formulation;
ii. To create awareness in target villages on the need for participatory land use planning and participate in the formulation of the plans;
iii. To conduct demand driven training to stakeholders on intensive commercial tree growing and other Program activities;
iv. To coordinate and supervise stakeholders in conducting professional forest management activities, like tree nursery, land preparation, pruning, thinning, and forest protection (e.g. fire prevention);
v. To monitor tree growing progress and other activities in the Program area within the district and write relevant reports;
vi. To coordinate identification and implementation of income generating activities within the district; vii. To encourage agro-forestry activities in Program area;
viii. To participate in the production and distribution of extension materials to stakeholders in the district; ix. "To lead the preparation of participatory plans in the district and coordinate their implementation.
The applicants must be ready to stay in villages and small townships.
