SENIOR GEOLOGIST

The Exploration division on African Barrick Gold requires a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Geologist to join the team.

KEY RESULT AREAS / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The primary purpose of the Senior Geologist is:

• To work closely with the Chief, Regional and Principal Geologist(s) to focus on project work involving target definition, field assessments, ore body modeling, data base functions, staff training and structural work.
• Planning of exploration programs and active involvement in field work to contribute to the discovery of new gold deposits that will have a significant impact on the company’s earnings and growth, as safely, quickly, cheaply
• Provide database support and training to departmental users.
• Carry out ore body modeling for exploration projects
• Ensure integrity of database
• Carry out GIS related tasks for exploration projects
• Development of training modules and direct involvement with training of junior staff within the Exploration Department to support exploration activities.
• Provide structural mapping expertise
• Ensure that necessary QA / QC protocols have been followed correctly. Assist in timely and accurate updating of geological sections/ plans and verification of database.
• Develop a sound knowledge of the geological controls of greenstone orebodies
• Participate in project work and presentations to a professional standard as and when required.
• Assist with and participate in the preparation of exploration programmes and budgets
• Write and compile monthly, quarterly and annual reports to Government departments, option holders and JV partners as required.
• Assist with the monitoring of competitor activities in the district and the identification of project generation/acquisition opportunities.

PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL DETAILS

• Minimum 5 years post graduate industry experience in exploration
• Post graduate degree in Geology is essential
• Knowledge of open pit operations will be an added advantage
• Ore body modeling skills
• Sound understanding of QA / QC procedures
• Competent with Datamine software package
• Sound technical background in all aspects of project geology
• The willingness and ability to travel extensively to our mine sites is essential
