Barrick Johannesburg is currently recruiting a Corporate Environmental manager. The role is essentially strategic and through effective leadership you will be required to implement the strategic initiatives and ensure the delivery of agreed outcomes via well executed tactical plans.
The Environment Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing and directing environmental policies and programs for all of Barrick Africa established, developing and closure properties. Specifically the Environmental Manager will implement the Barrick Environmental System.
The incumbent will lead all compliance, public and governmental interface on environmental issues for the region. In addition, there will be extensive interface with site operations management, executive management, outside consultants and regulatory agencies.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
§ Develop and implement the vision of the function and accompanying long-range plan for the company and the region.
§ Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure that the vision and plan satisfies the needs of all departments within the region and Corporate.
§ Direct, implement, and oversee new and existing corporate and regional Environmental policies, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal/national regulations.
§ Provide leadership by example and, as a mentor, facilitate the development, expertise, and effectiveness of the company environmental staff.
§ Ensure that environmental permitting for all projects is moved forward expeditiously and responsibly
§ Provide direction and expertise in the timely permitting of projects resulting in permits in the best interest of Barrick
§ Develop and maintain a clear and open line of communication between Environmental and operations personnel at mine sites regarding environmental issues and actions.
§ Provide Environmental expertise to executives and management, enhancing awareness of Environmental issues likely to impact/impacting on the organization
§ Act as senior Environmental spokesperson for the region, and as an integral part of the management team, representing Barrick Gold to both the mining industry and the general public in promoting the positive image of Barrick
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL DETAILS
A bachelor’s degree in Environmental management is required. An advanced degree preferred.
Experience
§ The incumbent will have excellent technical and leadership capabilities.
§ Able to respond under pressure with presence and poise to the public and media.
§ Act as an advocate and public relations representative for Barrick projects in political/public arenas, demonstrating a calm yet firm commitment to Environmental issues
§ Possess a sound understanding of company Environmental policies and objectives, a sense of personal responsibility, and the ability to identify and attach appropriate urgency to the requirements of various Environmental regulations.
§ Can firmly and assertively present company’s Environmental point of view both internally and publicly.
§ Possess a style of clear and effective communication, both oral and written
§ Be aggressive (yet diplomatic) and professional in the pursuit of Barrick’s Environmental objectives
§ Be able to differentiate between negligible issues and issues of possible impact. The person must know when to involve appropriate legal and technical personnel within the company to address such issues.
§ Act in a proactive manner to anticipate problems and solve existing problems in the context of operational requirements and environmental legal constraints.
§ Listen to opinions, formulate recommendations in a confident and constructive manner, and incorporate that input into a well-constructed environmental policy.
§ Exhibit solid intellectual capability, including strong knowledge of environmental issues within the minerals industry and a mature and level-headed approach to business.
§ Successful track record with risk/benefit analysis for complex problems.
