Project Summary:
The Systems Services Center (SSC) supports most of the education automation and systems efforts undertaken by AED’s Global Learning Group. Focusing almost exclusively on major Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) challenges faced by education, the Center provides support to multiple projects in over 44 countries. Center personnel have worked on system problems and approaches at virtually every level of education from pre-Kindergarten through Tertiary education, and at virtually every administrative level from the school or institution through international. Overall, the Center has substantial experience at the national level, where they have completed at least 21 integrated, national Education Management Information Systems (EMIS). Center personnel have worked with USAID, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNESCO, and other bi-lateral donors such as DfID, Swedish CIDA, Canadian CIDA, Irish Aid, and German, GTZ. The Global Learning Portal (GLP)www.glp.net is a worldwide, multi-lingual internet portal dedicated to meeting the needs of educators at all levels and stages of education with a focus on developing countries. To help solve global education challenges, expand knowledge management in education, and build educator skills and capacity to achieve global education and development goals the GLP: (i) facilitates interaction and collaboration among educators with their counterparts within their country, their region, and around the world; (ii) aids in the exchange of information among educators; and (iii) serves as a conduit for educators to leverage and share their contributions, experiences and knowledge. The activity is supported by an inclusive, voluntary public/private alliance initially founded in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development and Sun Microsystems.
Position Description:
The SSC Intern will assist in the planning and implementation of SSC activities and provide support to at least three on-going National Information System efforts. In addition, during at least one month, the intern will take on an “action research” project involving either girl’s education predictors of success in a particular country, or the investigation of the role of attendance in academic performance. This work will be written up. If conclusive or of sufficient quality, it will become the basis for a journal article.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Basic data analysis using common statistical programs such as STATA or SPSS--pursue OJT training in SPSS as needed;
- Review applicable software systems for support of teachers and staff in emerging countries as directed by SSC staff;
- Prepare a simple applied research paper on selected topics related to education quality and education efficiency. This may include the effect of Pupil/Teacher Ratios on educational performance in selected African countries, as well as other indicators;
- Research educational resources and gather content for general integration on the GLP portal;
- Assist in updating the SSC website and review descriptive material for clarity and impact.
- Support the SSC team as needed on other projects;
- Provide administrative needs to the project as necessary
- Provide support to proposal activities as needed.
Minimum Requirements:
Associate’s degree or its international equivalent in specific area of interest which intern is pursuing work or field experience in. Requires intern to have at least 2 yrs. of college experience. Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff. Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English; fluent in host country language. Ability to speak a foreign language is a plus. Prior work experience in a non- governmental organization (NGO).
