PATH is a partner on MCHIP which the USAID flagship project on maternal, newborn and child health. This project will support the Government of Rwanda in improving maternal and child health and nutrition both at the national and at the district level. The Nutritionist will work across health themes to integrate nutrition activities in health services and at the community level to strengthen nutrition activities that will prevent malnutrition in women and children.We are seeking a nutritionist to work on the Jhiepgo-led USAID-funded Maternal and Child Integrated Program (MCHIP) in Rwanda.
The Nutritionist is a full-time position, based in Kigali, with funding through June, 2012 with the potential for extension. Travel will be required to select districts supported by MCHIP to provide assistance in the design of and support for the implementation of nutrition activities identified by the Government of Rwanda, following up and building on previous USAID and other donor-funded nutrition activities. In Rwanda, the Nutritionist will report to the MCHIP Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Team Leader. The Nutritionist will also work closely with and receive short-term technical assistance and support from the MCHIP Technical Lead in Nutrition in Washington, D.C.
Principal duties and responsibilities include:
- Assist in reviewing existing nutrition programs in Rwanda with special focus on identifying follow-up activities for USAID-supported activities;
- Under the direction of the MNH Team Leader, liaise with and work with Government (Ministry of Health), various stakeholders and create networks with other partners for all nutrition activities supported by MCHIP;
- Assist in building technical assistance in nutrition at district and community-level implementation through on-the-job training and supervision;
- Integrate family planning messages into nutrition counseling and activities at clinics and community levels;
- Improve coverage for facility and community-based growth monitoring and promotion and use of information generated by these activities;
- Work with Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) to integrate nutrition messages into its training or train appropriate workers, such as community health workers, who can give counseling to the families RAB is working with to improve infant and young child nutrition and family nutrition.
- Assist in developing a monitoring and evaluation plan to assess the dissemination of messages by community and health workers and the uptake of messages by mothers and families;
- Assist in monitoring and evaluation MCHIP-supported nutrition activities.
- Demonstrated ability to think innovatively and work collaboratively;
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral);
- English fluency;
- Ability to travel as needed.
- USAID experience is a plus.
- Bachelor of Science or Masters degree in nutrition or public health related fields;
- 5+ years of experience in nutrition programming, particularly related to community-based activities and facility-based activities to prevent malnutrition in women and children;
- 3+ years of experience in giving technical assistance to developing BCC strategies, designing BCC campaigns and activities, developing BCC materials, messages and campaigns to support nutrition programming;
