Position Summary
We are looking for an outstanding Maternal Health Specialist for a large, potential DFID-funded Programme on Maternal and Child Health in South Africa. This is a full time position for three years based in South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
The Maternal Health Specialist will be responsible for providing overall technical leadership and coordination for activities that focus on strengthening school health programmes to improve primary health care services, ward level primary health care and obstetric and neonatal emergency services in South Africa. The Maternal Health Specialist will be need to bring specific technical expertise and credibility in the continuum of maternal health, from family planning and birth spacing to identification and preventive management of higher risk pregnancies to safe obstetric care, delivery, and post-partum management.
Qualifications
• Master’s in Public Health or health management or medical/nursing degree, with training in medicine or nursing and comprehensive maternal health service delivery expertise. • Minimum 7 years’ experience providing technical maternal health service delivery expertise in in large maternal and child health projects/ programmes in a developing country, preferably South Africa.
• Knowledge of maternal and child health, primary health care, obstetric and neonatal emergency services, and health systems strengthening. • Must have strong managerial skills with the ability to plan, organise and coordinate activities and inputs from several sources and partners, and manage the simultaneous delivery of multiple activities as well as across results. • Demonstrated experience applying routine monitoring information and human resources management to the improvement (quality, scale) of health services • Understanding of ‘change management’ at service delivery level, including the sensitization of service staff to client satisfaction and community engagement inputs • Experience of working in the African region, particularly South Africa is essential • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and develop positive working relationships with partners, and government officials • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships across teams and organisations • Experience working with DFID funded programs is preferred. • Excellent written and spoken English is a must. • South African nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.
