HelpAge International helps older people claim their rights, challenge discrimination and overcome poverty, so that they can lead dignified, secure, active and healthy lives. HelpAge has been working in Sudan for over 20 years and has provided essential support and services to vulnerable older people and their dependants. HelpAge seeks to address the immediate needs of older people affected by the IDP crisis caused by the protracted crisis in Darfur, while at the same time affecting some longer-term change by promoting enhanced protection and comprehensive support for older people through community-based integrated development programmes, capacity-building amongst local NGOs, and information and advocacy.
The Welfare Protection Officer will act as the focal point for the identification and promotion of protection needs of older people in West Darfur. More specifically, they will take a leading role in the international agency community in Darfur for advocating for the inclusion of older people in the response programmes of the humanitarian community. They will research and propose new and appropriate strategies for the protection of older people within HAI programming and manage their establishment.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience of field based humanitarian work, and a sound knowledge of issues related to protection and the international legal framework. You must have a clear understanding of the issues facing implementation of humanitarian projects, as well as experience of proposal development and project cycle management. Through your advocacy skills, you will be able to change and influence policy makers at senior level, and will have demonstrable experience of working with national and local government and UN agencies. Experience of work in Africa, specifically in insecure or highly sensitive political environments is essential, and Arabic language is highly desirable.
