The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral scientist to conduct research on how integration of water management for different landscape components (livestock, crops, trees, and human settlement patterns) can lead to livelihood and environment benefits in the Nile Basin of Ethiopia. Depending on the profile of the successful candidate this position will contribute to (i) developing scenarios for how landscapes might evolve and the implications for water productivity, ecosystem health and livelihoods (ii) analyzing performance and impact of local learning networks and/or (iii) assess the livelihood and poverty impacts of widespread adoption of different rainwater management strategies to support design of positive strategies. The research will be cross disciplinary involving aspects of livestock production, agronomy, soil science, water management and livelihoods analysis. The research will involve close collaboration with the International Water Management Institute.
Position: Postdoctoral Scientist in land and water management systems
Location: The position will be based in ILRI Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with considerable time spent at field sites in the Nile Basin of Ethiopia.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Specifically, the successful applicant, working closely with the multi-disciplinary and multi-organisational team will be expected to:
§ Lead development of scenarios for how landscapes might evolve and the implications of change for water productivity, ecosystem health and livelihoods.
§ Assess performance of local learning networks and how their actions influence innovation around rainwater management.
§ Gather and synthesize existing data on land and water management and liaise with modelers in the development of landscape models of land and water use
§ Assess the livelihood and poverty impacts of different rainwater management strategies.
§ Contribute a livestock dimension to the development of rainwater management strategies.
§ Liaise regularly with the larger project team to ensure the research is aligned with broader project objectives.
§ To co-supervise Masters students and support staff engaged by the project
§ To publish in national and international journals and, contribute to research reports, briefs and strategic communication material targeted at various audiences at different scales.
Qualifications
§ A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in Land, Livestock and Water Management, or a relevant discipline related to agricultural systems in developing countries with some understanding of bio-physical and socio-economic aspects of agricultural systems
§ Proven success in analysis of agricultural systems, having experience in collection of primary data and survey design in developing countries.
§ Demonstrated skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
§ Understanding and preferably experience of modeling approaches
§ Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in developing countries. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage technical teams at research sites. Good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English
- A willingness to travel frequently
Post doctoral contracts are available for two years and are non-renewable. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
