Ending violence against women is receiving increased attention from governments, civil society, donors and the UN system. This is an encouraging indication that this universal human rights violation is increasingly receiving the concern and support it merits. In response, the Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) Cluster at UN WOMEN Headquarters has expanded its programming support to provide greater inputs to global, regional, national and local efforts to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls. To meet the growing demands on UN WOMEN advocacy, technical and policy advisory services, UN WOMEN's Ending Violence against Women Cluster desires to hire an expert writer/editor with communications expertise to develop outreach and media-related materials, and the global dissemination of key products and information about programme developments and related events. |
Duties and Responsibilities |
The consultant will satisfy materials production, communications and dissemination needs of the Ending Violence against Women Cluster with a focus on particular flagship initiatives.
Under the overall supervision of the Advisor, EVAW Cluster, and the guidance and collaboration of the Cluster technical and administrative staff, as well as other units of the organization as may be required, the consultant will undertake the following tasks: - Design, development, implementation and monitoring of a communications and dissemination plan for the Virtual Knowledge Centre to End Violence against Women and Girls (www.endvawnow.org) with attention to region-specific outlets as well as mainstream knowledge-sharing venues;
- Writing and editing an advocacy kit for the Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme; managing its design, printing and distribution (using the existing branding);
- Development, implementation, and monitoring of a Communications Plan for the Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme, including a calendar of key advocacy opportunities;
- Developing brief written communications as needed (i.e. for internet dissemination of the above or other key initiatives; press notices as may be needed; appealing promotional flyers; other, as may be needed);
- For all deliverables, determination of feasible and concrete communications mediums and opportunities (i.e. web-based, print, other);
- Other tasks and advisory services as may be relevant (e.g. guidance on development and management of a disaggregated contacts and distribution list, for database sorting for tailored communications to varied audiences and purposes; development and systematization of media soundbytes building on work advanced)
- Oversee the distribution of advocacy and communication materials to partners worldwide with the support of administrative staff.

Required Skills and Experience |
Education: - Advanced University degree or equivalent in Communications.
Experience: - A minimum of five years relevant experience;
- Experience in writing, editing and publishing communications, advocacy and promotional materials;
- Journalistic background and/or experience in dealing with the media an asset;
- Experience within the United Nations is highly desirable;
- Familiarity and experience addressing gender equality and gender-based violence issues;
- Excellent writing and editorial skills in English.
Language requirements: - Fluency in English (written and oral);
- Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an asset.
